Most of the influencers aren't even in on the investment, they just get paid to pump, and a lot of them don't even get paid, they just do it for the eye balls.

People want to get rich quick.

There's going to be a never ending list of people that will tell them how - just so they can get useless karma points on Social Media, even if they don't make any money, and just convince you to lose your money.

What about Amish people? Or Buddhists?

Put it into a storage locker. Pre-pay 5 years of fees on the locker. Wait 5 years.

This is what we call a 'self-sovling-problem'

klatchex_too · 16 days ago
Where I live none of the storage companies will let you pre-pay 1 year of rent let alone 5.

A major part of their business model is giving low initial rates and then raising the rent over and over knowing what a pain it will be for the renters to move to a different storage place.

The industry acronym for the strategy is "ECRIs", existing customer rate increases, and it is a profitability metric they track.

It's fun to find a colleague's collection of Knuth's Art of Computer Programming Books books and open them to hear the crack of a book that's never been opened before.

All this machinery making modern music can still be open-hearted. It's really just a question of your honesty.

Faster:

Put sanctions on Denmark, not like actual sanctions, just +10000% tariffs.

Open investigations for corruption, funding terrorism, release dirty secrets of the government.

Help migrants to go to Denmark.

Arrange with Russia little green men to come on the island or just make it fear that Russia is planning an attack. US to the rescue.

Offer lot of money to each inhabitants.

Spread information that Denmark abandoned the island for so many years.

Plenty of ideas.

Those in my list are somewhat debatable, but you can get creative and figure out good ones.

etc

U.S. Marine Corps expeditionary units.

This could be done tonight.

In every other case, in every other industry, we call people who buy a limited resource, transform it in no way, and sell it at a profit a "scalper".

For a long time I thought, "maybe landlords are offering some service and not just squeezing people...." But over the past decade it's become clearer and clearer how predatory and parasitic the industry is. Things like this. Things like landlords all using the same pricing algorithms so they can raise rents in unison.

Buying something that is being sold for less than it is worth and then immediately reselling it for what it is worth is what I would call "arbitrage". So someone doing that would be an arbitrageur.

In your opinion, what is the difference between arbitrage and scalping?

I think two phenomena are at play here, other than plain-old enshittification:

1) Demand for mailing of common letters and documents has dramatically decreased, so it makes sense to defund the mail system. Economies of scale also suffer, further compounding inefficiency

2) In the times of the Pony Express it was probably ok to accept the death of a few riders here and there. Labor standards and thus costs are a major factor in this segment, and they have risen a lot

> In the times of the Pony Express it was probably ok to accept the death of a few riders here and there

That made me curious so I looked it up: "There is historical documentation that four Pony riders were killed by Indians; one was hanged for murder after he got drunk and killed a man; one died in an unrelated accident; and two froze to death."

I was 10 in '72, in a big metropolis. I'd take off on my Stingray bike on all day jaunts all over. The only comments I got were from my mom who made sure I had change to phone home in case I got a flat. I started a 4am paper route on that bike two years later, nobody batted an eye. It was the best of times.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

I was in elementary school when the arcade game craze happened, PacMan, Donkey Kong, etc. I would wander the streets looking for games to play. There were arcade games in every grocery store, restaurants, every convenience store (so basically just 7-11s). Home gaming consoles could not begin to match what was in the arcades at that time. I would walk the streets looking for new ones to play.

I mostly played arcade games, but I would play pinball too. One day I was walking past a place and saw a pinball game and went in and started playing. I think it was on the second quarter when someone came and asked if I was there with my parents. I said no and they told me I had to leave since minors weren't allowed in a bar. I don't think I even know what a bar was at that time.

Elementary school kid hanging out in a bar without his parents would get some CPS attention these days I guess.

The worst of times part is, if I was "free range" it wasn't because my parents had discussed the risks and benefits of allowing me to wander the streets. No kid I knew had both parents at home back then. Our moms worked. We were free range because no one gave a shit what we did as long as we weren't causing them some immediate problem. So we had freedom. It was both glorious and horrible.

How large is the space with the humidifier? My space is wide open and that might be the biggest reason for my lack of increased PM2.5 readings.
klatchex_too · 2 months ago
I think the parent poster is correct that it depends on the water.

I have a couple ultrasonic humidifiers, if tap water is put in them it immediately sends the AQI on my air quality monitor into the "Dangerous" level. I have the monitor upstairs and it detected it when my girlfriend put tap water in the humidifier downstairs.

Purified or distilled water works fine. I bought a counter top water distiller because it was a pain lugging 15 gallons of water into the house every week all winter. You can see the residue of whatever was in the tap water at the bottom of the distiller after it runs and it doesn't look like anything I would want to be breathing.
