How is Anthropic, OpenAI and xAi going to compete against the likes of Google that can spend $200 billion a year? It’s an impossible war and all these investors are throwing their money into a bottomless insatiable pit of money.

Until the funding stops for one reason or another and then everyone loses all their money at once like a star that collapses into a black hole singularity in a femtosecond.

Slight counter point - claude code is basically the only developer tool that ever been happy to pay money for. Getting the entire software industry to give you $200/mo/person is quite the market.

In general people who demonise Thatcher largely agree with her on many policies. They are generally pro EU (she campaigned to remain in the referendum on EEC membership in 1975), they are usually opposed to reopening coal mines, or nationalising BP (or BA or JLR) or making telecommunications a state owned monopoly. To be fair they might favour nationalising utilities and train operating companies, but that is about it. They rarely disagree with her that climate change risks "irretrievable damage to the atmosphere, to the oceans, to earth itself", and are unlikely to want to bring back the use of CFCs.

I've read Dune - I know exactly where this is going. Please do not apply sand trout directly to you skin unless you are ready to control the spice.

LLMs are really great at copy/pasting answers from stack overflow and fitting them to work in a given system. If your work is outside what is answerable on stack overflow you're going to end up fighting the results constantly.

Front end pages like a user settings page? Done. One shottable.

Nuanced data migration problems specific to your stack? You're going to be yelling at the agent.

> LLM evangelists - are you willing to admit that you just might not be that good at programming computers? Maybe you once were. Maybe you never were.

A bit harsh considering that many of us used knowledge bases like SO for so long to figure out new problems that we were confronting.

Toll roads are good economics. If a choice has negative externalities (more traffic, more pollution, road damage), tax it.
kiernanmcgowan · 2 months ago
It’s also a direct usage tax to support road maintenance. Heavier users of the road ways end up contributing more to the maintenance of the public good.

We had a proxy for that via gasoline taxes but with EV becoming more common we need to find a replacement for that revenue.

Yeah, this is what I don't understand. Why did we gut 18F, which was doing incredible work and make a... a new version? Seems the opposite of reducing waste.
kiernanmcgowan · 2 months ago
Because 18F was from the Obama administration
