kgen commented on If you care about security you might want to move the iPhone Camera app   blog.jgc.org/2025/12/if-y... · Posted by u/jgrahamc

I couldn’t get it to trigger until I opened the camera app and made sure to switch to the front facing camera before exiting. After doing that I was able to consistently trigger the indicator when swiping across and long-pressing the icon.

EDIT: it also only seems to happen if the camera icon is on one of your Home Screen pages. I haven’t been able to reproduce the behavior when swiping across the icon while in the App Library. Wonder why they decided to do it that way? Do most people keep a camera icon on their Home Screen? That would be baffling to me. Why clutter your Home Screen when you can so easily access the camera from the lock screen or by using the physical camera button on newer iPhones?

Because it's on the homescreen in the default layout and a large number of people don't change their defaults?

Code as configuration loses one primary benefit which is being able to read the actual config and know exactly what will apply. In the example in the article you would get the same benefit by disallowing users to edit the config directly and instead require the config to be generated via a cmdline app/service that encodes the same policy?
kgen commented on QuakeNotch: Quake Terminal on your MacBook's notch   quakenotch.com... · Posted by u/rohanrhu

Expectation: "Quake terminal" implies playing Quake, possibly in some Asciinema-type way. Maybe just starting the built-in Quake terminal without the game-play.

Reality: a regular terminal that starts in the notch and expands to normal window.

I guess it's somehow based on the terminal that was in Quake but that was only really used for issuing quake commands, not really for being a posix-compliant, VT-100 compatible terminal.

[Update: it was quickly pointed out that "Quake terminal" is a term of art for one line terminal that can easily expand. I am a heavy terminal user but genuinely did not know that term was commonplace. Grumpiness retracted.]

Totally agree, I even grew up in the quake/dn3d era and wasn't familiar with the term either!

No, no, no, no, NO. No it's not. And you have zero proof of this. Its done this way because its the lowest effort to give security theater.

kgen · 9 months ago
What's the theater with sms 2fa? That is more secure than not having it enabled no?

Stardew is the opposite of relaxing for me. It’s a never ending to-do list and sense that you don’t have enough time. It’s “Chores: The video game”
kgen · 10 months ago
When I started stardew I didn't know how to play so I would spend days waking up walking around and then go back to sleep repeating until my parsnips grew, but when I introduced my SO to the game, we ended up trying to learn how to actually play and then ended up with spreadsheets to track all the seasons, grow cycles, relationships and whatever else lol

The identity of the user is secret. Others will just see a public key.
kgen · 10 months ago
Only in theory right? The moment you use it with a service that requires credentials or an email or a physical address to mail to, it's not, unless you somehow wash it through an anonymous pool somehow

Yes, occam's razor would suggest the government randomly decided exactly now was the time to start working in our best interests, and also those interests are super secret and have absolutely nothing to do with recent geopolitical happenings nor anything to do with the stated beliefs of the politicians driving the government.
kgen · a year ago
I don't know why you think it's randomly (or recently) decided -- it started in 2020 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restrictions_on_TikTok_in_the_...), culminating in this act (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protecting_Americans_from_Fore...) banning the app, which passed 360-58.

Have you ever gotten 36 people to agree to something, let alone 360? There's obviously more to this that we aren't aware of.

> made them vote together across party lines

Ha, is that uniparty vote supposed to be something meaningful? If the government had true concerns, they could 1) be aired to the public and 2) other senators like Thomas Massie and Rand Paul would not be speaking against the ban.

People can change their views and minds. It's only a problem when you lie and pretend you didn't. Pres Biden signed the law and could suspend it now if he wanted, but he chose not to do it as it'd be contradictory to his own signing. And of course soon-to-be President Trump will get the credit for reverting it. Nobody cares about the details beyond those invested into politik.

Or maybe occam's razor suggests that there's indeed something more concerning about usage of the app that we aren't privy to?

To be honest, it's probably not enough to just block these scrapers if they are acting maliciously, people should just start serving generated content back to it and see how long it takes for them to catch on and fix the problem
