> Prior to this, getting up and running from a cold-start might’ve required installing or even compiling severall OSS packages, carefully noting path locations, standing up a specialized database… Enough work that a data generalist might not have bothered, or their IT department might not have supported it.

I've been able to "CREATE EXTENSION postgis;" for more than a decade. There have been spatial extensions for PG, MySQL, Oracle, MS SQL Server, and SQLite for a long time. DuckDB doesn't make any material difference in how easy it is to install.

The benefits of a simple install were exaggerated, I think the real point is the cloud native integration and the sheer scalability

I hope I'm not too late and this doesn't get buried - anyone interested should check out https://www.findhelp.org/ ! I work here and we are super hiring for engineers :)

Edit - ah, he means the search engine should be a non-profit. Not what I thought he meant.

I don't know, I just don't think encouraging self-doubt in general is a great idea for the industry as a whole (right now). If anything, people lack confidence given the omnipresence of imposter syndrome.

>Excessive confidence seems to work to impress some people early on, but total belief in your own abilities and eventual world domination is going to make you think you can do anything, and that gets in the way of making good decisions.

Really, how many people truly reach that stage? The far majority of professional tech people I meet are so humble they barely even question management on technical decisions. Maybe that's just my experience with primarily passive people, but it certainly doesn't reflect what I tend to see here, on Twitter and on Reddit.

IME, "Excessive confidence" is usually a shield for insecurity anyway.

Colleges giving new graduates even 10% of this context would completely change the game. I went in with a ton of passion but absolutely 0 guidance, ended up 6 figures in debt with a degree I only kinda use today.
