Still used nowadays: airplane reflections are being used by ham radio dudes. There's a software around that even calculates the optimal reflection parameters based on ADS-B aggregators.

Thanks too relatively modern digital modes this doesn't need too much transmission power.

On the upper GHz bands with dishes they even manage to do reliable FM chats. But that requires a lot of gain and active steering of the dish.

I'm hopeful but pessimistic about Slate. There is still time for them to A.) raise prices because of "unforeseen" issues, B.) enshittify with tech or wacky pricing structures.

I spammed the columns from 1 to 402 (with 400 rows), and i saw some cool patterns. I can see a few nodes of clockwise rotation that converges into a single node from >200 columns that starts makes its way down the screen. Trippy.

idk, hardware engineering (whether electrical, mechanical, civil, aerospace, etc) is just as lucrative and IMO more interesting, since physics isn't an invention of the human mind like software is, and mistakes go boom instead of segfault.

About $10,000 per unit (including the PTAC removal/wall repair), sheesh. A new mini split in my St Louis (city) house was $5.5k, and that was one rung up from lowball $4k contractor.

Also, instead of the OEM wifi module, i had success with a sensibo, which has temp/hum/CO2/TVOC sensor, HomeKit control, and an IR blaster. I took that route when I learned the wifi module was locked down to their app, with no HomeKit.

Bluetooth and wifi messengers have been awful over the years, but pretty much every hardware messanger (Gotenna, beartooth, and now meshtastic/meshcore/TTN/lora etc) have been very effective.

Also FRS radios are still a thing.

Though it still would be nice for cell phones to be telecommunicators instead of *cell* communicators.

for me kagi started out as a few searches and compared between it, DDG and google.

and then i ran out of free searches, so I gave them $5.

and then i ran out of $5 worth of searches so i kept renewing, $5 more. And again, and again.

At this point I had all my defaults set to kagi because I loved it. Just the fact there are no ads or sponsored leads and I can more-or-less kill webpages completely generated and SEO'd with LLMs, I can actually do research again.

and then I became a full subscriber, with orion, blacklists, I use the quick answer (LLM) and small web searching fruitfully, and joined their discord.

It's been a long time since I fell head over heels for a technology product, and this being something so core to how I use the internet, it's a godsend.

Enjoying it at least until they decide money is nice and growth is imperative, they go public, and enshittifies.

Is there any way people would be incentivized to setup a little weather station/contribute to data and get paid. Wonder if there's a model where people could make money/not game the system too. It would have to be standardized/verified to be accurate somehow.

same model as flightaware et al use for crowdsourced ADS-B air traffic monitoring. You set up an ADS-B receiving station, send your feed to FA, and in return you get a premium-level account.

With a manual car, it was common to downshift and use the engine to decelerate. I’m wondering if electric vehicles might actually cause a return to a third pedal to re-add some of the fine tuned controls that a manual transmission allowed. Maybe the “downshift” could engage the regen brake specifically.

The bolt EUV has a paddle on the wheel above the turn signal stalk that is used to invoke regen braking in normal drive mode, and when used in one-pedal drive mode adds an extra bit of regen without having to use the brake pedal. It also doubles to cancel cruise control. It's in the perfect location too. And it feels very well blended, precise, constant, and smooth.

Every other EV should have this. I often get EV rental Hyundais, which have 4 levels of iPedal - 3 regen levels and "max" aka one-pedal drive. They're managed by paddle shifters on the wheel. They don't default back to one pedal and any extra re-gen is still managed by the brake pedal.
