I have the strong feeling, that so many people like to watch ads. People like to watch ads more than the actual content. So chrome, egde and safari are and will be the people's browsers. Why even bother?

I like ads, but detest cookie banners.

Good ads can teach you a lesson about copywriting or storytelling, cookie banners are pure time wasters.

Let's get concrete! What is boring tech in the context of creating an SPA website?

A LAMP stack (seems too old and boring give that most SPAs want some form of real time updating)

React? Is that old and boring yet or new and unproven? React with what (since react is just a framework for DOM manipulation

Rails? Does that meet today's requirements? At the time it wasn't written for SPAs, was written for MPAs.

Yes, I don't know anyone who uses Guice, but lots of people who use Spring. The momentum was never there, nor it will be.

This trend will benefit big companies and harm small local companies.

Hiring abroad is not as easy as you might think, usually you need to establish legal presence in the other country and other requirements. And who has resources to do that? Bingo, big companies. Small local companies will be left unable to compete, as they will be forced to hire locally, at higher expense.

The article is hollow but from what I understand the gist of the issue is:

Google is cutting down on the extensions ability to read and modify your web requests on the fly. As a side effect adblocker type extensions need to pass their blacklist patterns to chrome which will enforce it on their behalf. Chrome cites improved privacy because users won't need to give random extensions full read write access to pretty much all their online activities and performance gains because arbitrary adblocking code cannot run anymore and it needs to be in form of a blacklist patterns. Lastly Apple Safari has been doing the same all along.

The opponent arguments (expressed in the article and by many people leaving comments here) are that this kneecaps some AdBlock extensions because they need to run arbitrary code as the declarative API is not flexible enough for them and this is part of Google covert plan to kill adblocking.

I personally agree with the Chrome team's argument here

kaixi · 4 years ago
Extensions will still be able to read all the requests, just not block them, so Google's argument for privacy is moot.

Given that one of the biggest performance hogs are the ads and tracking scripts on a page, the argument for performance seems sketchy too.

I don't use adblockers myself, as I actually like seeing ads, but Google's arguments are very weak here.

Are there any alternatives? I enjoy watching the long-term decline of the websites of former employers I don't like.

Why did you want to run IE in Linux? This is just closed source google chrome with MS spyware and some UI changes and MS popups.

Google Chrome is closed source too.

Personally I find Backblaze B2 more compelling.

... Ok, after writing that, I realized that I should probably look up R2's offering first. And then my jaw hit the floor at "free egress bandwidth".

Free egress bandwidth? Yes please.

I will instantly convert.

Then I was worried about price per GB. $0.015/GB is incredibly competitive.

Good lord, where do I get early access to this thing? I'd transition all our infra today.

kaixi · 4 years ago
B2 to Cloudflare egress is free, they are both part of Bandwidth Alliance: https://www.backblaze.com/b2/solutions/content-delivery.html
