I have been paying for JetBrains for years, but, as many have pointed out in this thread, between the performance issues and agentic IDEs like Cursor, it's getting harder and harder to justify.

JetBrains, just focus on improving the existing IDEs and naturally embedding access to third party LLM agents in them and you're good to go.

It's crazy that I'm paying for IntellJ yet can't hook up my own LLM to it. Jetbrains wants to be some middleman instead of letting me use my tools. I won't and I can't use your hosted LLMs, period.

I'm not familiar with the "Photos Library.app", but I have an m4 mini with my photos in a Photo's Library. I'd love to know your script to rsync the photos into a separate drive/directory
jval43 · 2 days ago
The Photos library "file" is just a big folder, I just sync the whole thing.

#!/bin/sh rsync --iconv=utf-8-mac,utf-8 -avh --delete-after --partial --progress /Volumes/myExternalDrive/Photos\ Library.photoslibrary myuser@mylinuxmachine.local:"/srv/myExternalDriveBackup/"

(note: tested with brew rsync, IIRC the default rsync is outdated on macOS)

Somewhere in the directory structure is a folder /originals/ which has all the actual files.

Note that this is only a last resort backup. Restoring the library as a whole requires a Mac with a compatible OS version. Restoring without a Mac would only get you the originals, so only the out-of-camera files (jpg, heic, raw), with no edits or metadata changes from Apple Photos applied (Apple Photos doesn't touch the EXIF data). You'd probably also lose the video part of all live photos, as the live video files stored as separate files and not part of the .heic files. They're there, but not very usable.

An alternative to this workflow is to export all photos (with edits applied) from the Photos app, but honestly I'm not sure if that even works and how long it would take for multi-TB libraries.

Wow. This is a cautionary tale. I don't think I'd be as devastated as this poor chap, but as it grew I realize I've allowed my iCloud photo library to become a single copy.

How are people handling this these days? If i wanted to ensure a full backup of everything on my iCloud to a NAS, what's the best way these days? Seems like they make it difficult by design..

I run a separate Mac Mini that has the full iCloud Photos library on a massive external drive, set to "Download originals". I then rsync that filesystem to a separate Linux box. This works but you must not ever disconnect the external drive.

I don't have a solution for iCloud Drive, as there wasn't a keep offline setting last time I checked. So use it only ephemerally.

If a carpenter builds a crappy shelf “because” his power tools are not calibrated correctly - that’s a crappy carpenter, not a crappy tool.

If a scientist uses an LLM to write a paper with fabricated citations - that’s a crappy scientist.

AI is not the problem, laziness and negligence is. There needs to be serious social consequences to this kind of thing, otherwise we are tacitly endorsing it.

jval43 · 8 days ago
If a scientist just completely "made up" their references 10 years ago, that's a fraudster. Not just dishonesty but outright academic fraud.

If a scientist does it now, they just blame it on AI. But the consequences should remain the same. This is not an honest mistake.

People that do this - even once - should be banned for life. They put their name on the thing. But just like with plagiarism, falsifying data and academic cheating, somehow a large subset of people thinks it's okay to cheat and lie, and another subset gives them chance after chance to misbehave like they're some kind of children. But these are adults and anyone doing this simply lacks morals and will never improve.

And yes, I've published in academia and I've never cheated or plagiarized in my life. That should not be a drawback.

Arena shooters have been relegated to side modes in other, bigger games. Probably the last big shooter with that as its focus was Halo: Infinite, but that struggled to stay relevant and its next big update will be its last.

Splitgate captures the feel nicely. Simple, fast, and last I checked free. Very recommended.

I liked UT3 too, but I guess UT2004 was the peak, with all its different game modes. UT3 felt a little bit like a console thing, with fewer modes. Overall I had much more fun with UT2004, playing it with friends in LAN. UT3 simply didn't pack as much fun gameplay.

UT3 felt sluggish at the time. Both in gameplay and graphics performance. Still much faster than most games today of course.

It’s 2025. Nobody is looking at a hand-drawn map for accuracy.

You may well need to in the Alps. If the satellite map only shows it snow-covered and you need to know what's beneath, hand-drawn it is.
