in the UK the price everyone pays is set according to the marginal price

essentially this means if there's one milliwatt of gas on the grid: everyone pays the gas price

as a result consumers see very benefit from renewables

(but the renewable generators are making out like bandits)

Yes that's sound weird but this is to make sure gas peaker plants which by definition run only a fraction of time can be profitable and be built.

Way cheaper than gasoline, that is why.

Diesel engines are also more efficient.

> Your claim that the shipping industry is "desperate to decarbonize" also needs a citation.

If anything, I think the shipping industry will be the last to de-carbonize, in the same way it's been the refuge of burning dirty fuels and NOx emissions.

julosflb · a year ago
Nearly 40% of shipping volume worldwide is moving fossil fuels (coal, oil, gaz). The easiest way to reduce drastically shipping emission is reducing usage of fossil fuels...

A statement like "EVs pollute more than ICE engines" needs substantiation.

Large power generation systems (even messy ones like coal) are tremendously more efficient per unit CO2 produced than a car engine[1]. You could make a case, though it's been proven wrong many times, that the production of the battery in an EV generates more waste than a comparable ICE vehicle.

And electric motors are way more efficient than ICE motors that hardly reach 40% efficiency.

Those “read a novel” and write about it every chapter really helps. I wonder if that type of exercise would work now kids know about AI, my guess is that parents shouldn’t tell their kids about LLMs too early as they can depend on it and mess them up

They didn't wait for their parents to tell - they figured out with their friends.

Spoiler Alert. If you haven't read "Endurance" the article gives away a critical piece of info - which crew members didn't make it. Read the book first, it is the greatest survival story ever told. Not just because it's true. It's just that incredible.
julosflb · a year ago
I can confirm. I didn't know the story and I picked up that book randomly in a book store a couple years ago. I loved it.
