jrmcauliffe commented on Reverse Engineering the Prom for the SGI O2   mattst88.com/blog/2026/02... · Posted by u/mattst88

I often see superbly restored SGI equipment at VCF and also own a few SGI equipment that I hope to get to some point in my life but I have never seen any interesting new software or usage of these machines other than the stock "cool" demo programs(The file manager, the gears demo and others running at the same time). Is there any actual cool homebrew occuring on these platforms?

The main watering hole for the hobbyist community around these machines vanished from the internet a while back, taking the forums and info around porting software with it.. I guess some of it is available via wayback etc.

I still don't really understand this story. I know that ICE invaded the factory and detained a few hundred people. They were vanished away and presumably being speedily sent back to Korea. Sure.

But every article I've read on this makes no statement about whether any of these hundreds of people were actually working without an appropriate visa, or whether they were given the chance to demonstrate their legitimacy, or whether any of these hundreds of people got to defend their case to a judge. Shouting "I'm here legally" while being rounded up by LEOs is not due process.

I'm not particularly sympathetic to Hyundai here, and it wouldn't be surprising if they subcontracted a sublegal operation to cut costs. But in a group of a few hundred people it's quite hard to imagine none of them have cases even worth hearing.

I mean, it would be surprising. In what world does Hyundai want to build a multi billion dollar plant in a foreign country and subcontract to a 'sublegal operation' which still has to send foreign nationals, presumably experts in their specific fields along with housing them to 'cut costs'...?

Exactly what specialized tools do you need to work on a car? Are you counting closed end wrenches and sockets as "specialized" or something?

Had a mobile mechanic unable to change the timing belt on our 10 y/o Volkswagen Golf because the balancer is now secured with a proprietary lock-ring instead of four hex bolts.

He said this sort of thing is getting more common and even if he did want to buy all of the required bits and bobs he wouldn't be able to fit them all in his van.

Even in the 'good old days', you weren't getting very far working on your car without things like gear pullers, timing guns and feeler gauges. All things that technically you could be using for other things, but not exactly in the average toolbox of someone that doesn't work on cars.

Is it really miraculous, though? Even on a very busy runway, a specific spot would be free of anything most of the time.

But if anything is going to push it over the edge of going off (for whatever reason it has finally decided it's time), it's going to be a plane driving over the top / near it.

>and GSuite is being mocked and everyone is recommending Office and Teams as the obvious choice for starting your business.

These must be paid shills. While it's actually quite understandable why real people and businesses would want to use and recommend MS Office, no one in their right mind actually thinks Teams is the best video chat tool in the world. Any serious business uses Zoom, Slack, etc.

Lol any serious business. Shoutout to all the people at mega-corps using Teams!

My favorite is the hobbyist youtube videos sponsored by Altium. Just pay 10k plus 2/3k per year afterwards and you too can design boards like I can! (/s)

But the reality is I unsubscribed from those creators, because I never want to see someone design a board in Altium, I want to see how they build a board using kicad.

From the software side, I really like the license model of the all products pack from JetBrains. And it goes with me wherever I go.

jrmcauliffe · 2 years ago
Yeah, I love the fact that Jetbrains 'everything' is actually affordable by a solo software engineer and you can just 'bring your own tools' to a job.
