I've been using Delta Chat with a lot of success. It is easy, it works, bots are easy and the concept is improving. They even plan to have forward secrecy. So, give it a try. If you explored it a long time ago, try again, many things have improved in that ecosystem.

Yeah it's a lot more "just works" than Matrix, still some limitations but improving quickly.

Tried checking Cloudflare’s status on Downdetector, but Downdetector was also behind Cloudflare. Internet checkmate.

It’s not just websites :-/

Things like Apple private relay (which way too many people seem to have it enabled) are tunnelled via Cloudflare, maybe using warp?

I pay for Bear Blog, too. But this year has been problem after problem for its sole proprietor, and I don’t think it’s going to get better.

As much as I love the service and enjoy the transparency, I do wonder about the future of smaller operator services as the Internet continues it's descent into a giant mess :-)

Gotta put in a plug for Migadu: https://www.migadu.com/pricing/

Happy customer over a couple of years.

Tried them with a domain that gets a bunch of spam, unfortunately their filtering is not as good as others like Fastmail it seems.

I’ve been a Fastmail user for years, having left Gmail. It works great and have nothing be but praise for them. I use my own domain with them so if I decide to leave it’s not an issue worrying about updating people with my new email.

Love the keyboard shortcuts in the web interface, killer feature. Also the rules management and folder management is beyond what a lot of other similar providers offer.

Is there a way to use Fastmail such that you run a receive email server but use Fastmail to send?

I don't mind running an email server for receive. I despise all the hoops you have to jump through for send deliverability.

josephb · 7 months ago
If you plan on running your own inbound email, you would be better using something like smtp2go, dnsexit or others for your outbound.

Delta Chat has the option of using chatmail servers that they host themselves.

Chatmail relays can be run by anyone, they are designed to be fairly minimal and lightweight, just running what is needed to support the "encrypted chat" part, not regular email.

Sigh, I just moved a bunch of domains over, after The Jolly Teapot started using and recommended them.

Yeah it's disappointing after recently moving things over.

Porkbun is cheaper than Namecheap by a few dollars especially on renewals. Namecheap’s renewal price is semi-hidden/obscured.

All my domains are with Namecheap except 1-2 I was/am testing on Porkbun but I’m considering a switch since it means a hundred or two dollars a year in savings.

FWIW I find https://tldes.com pretty useful for keeping an eye on who is currently offering the best renewal for various TLDs I use.
