The USA is a fantastic ally! When a small aircraft was recently hijacked from Vancouver international airport, guess which Air Force came to our rescue? Thank you!!

While there’s a lot of news and media about trade wars with the USA, the vast majority 85% of it remains under the free trade agreement. China does not even come close to a free and open market for us and their state sponsored corporate espionage is a real and growing danger.

I'd imagine the threats of annexation are more concerning than the tariffs.

Teams works fine for my limited needs. Though it feels sluggish, sometimes a chat or calendar takes 3 seconds to load.
jonbiggums22 · 4 months ago
Even loading a command prompt or the calculator takes more than 3 seconds on Windows 11 so maybe they've just lowered the bar so much it passes internal testing.

They're the ones selling the gambling games. They didn't create them, but they do sell them.

They also ban many types of apps so they can't even claim it's a free market that they don't want to/can't control.

The problem with flash is that it was a security, performance and usability nightmare for web browsers.

Yes the games and videos were cool, but 99% of the usage of Flash was awful ads and UI/UX elements.

I just used an click to load flash extension in firefox back then and everything was fine.

Yet prices of these tests will not go down. AI and the companies that perform the test will see the rewards of eliminating these skilled jobs. The consumer will not see the savings.
jonbiggums22 · 4 months ago
Why would they go down? Once all the existing workforce is deskilled or retired there's no going back so they can jack the service price up. If it was an open platform you might have competitors spring up as a relief valve to that but the space is so regulated I don't think there's any room for that kind of platform.

In my state (OR) it takes 4 years to become licensed to do the work for others but homeowners can do the work themselves.

My experience is that it’s not generally well understood how simple it is to install mini splits. The supply companies won’t sell to you directly outside of d2c web companies like hvacdirect

jonbiggums22 · 4 months ago
My state has a program where they give you big rebates but only if you use some one on their list of approved installers and since there aren't many installers it creates a big backlog. Homeowners who could install them themselves miss out on the rebate.

How do you justify specializing in mobile development when it's very clear that you're just sharecroppers on someone else's land?
jonbiggums22 · 4 months ago
Like Uber drivers' using their girlfriends' ID verification because they have a criminal record, you can also just cut in some random guy to borrow his ID for another chance. There should be plenty of dudes available willing to sell an ID verification for cheap in poorer countries but there's also plenty in wealthy countries because very few anywhere were ever going to have a Google developer account in the first place.

> Basically AMD missed the opportunity to be first mover on a market which is now huge with a project Apple proved to be viable three years after the planned AMD release. Any way you look at it, it seems like a major miss.

I don't think this is a fair position. It could as well be that focusing in K12 would have delayed Zen, maybe delaying it enough that it could have become irrelevant by the time it got to market.

Remember that while Zen was a good CPU, the only reason it made as much impact as it did was because it also was released in a good time (when Intel was stumbling with 10nm and releasing Skylake refresh after Skylake refresh).

jonbiggums22 · 4 months ago
AMD was a pretty stripped down company at that point. They'd bet it all on Zen so when it got a foothold it made sense to double down on it until they could recover.

The thing about being broke is you may know about good opportunities but not have the resources to actually make use of them.

If I was a conspiracy theorist I might think that the ruling class who so desperately want these kinds of powers are intentionally dividing nations and breaking down social cohesion so the populace must turn to the governments for protection. They're hoping to create societies where the people will beg them to scan private messages rather than to demand rights.

Give it another 10 years the way things are going, and I'm sure it will be back.

The main purpose is to identify any nascent organization of political opposition to the status quo so it can be destroyed in its infancy with a minimum amount of resources. It will be used to solve some crimes too but solving crimes still involves a lot of manpower (expensive) and if they solved crime people would be less supportive of expanding surveillance powers even further so you don't really want to do a great job at that.
