jgorn commented on When Your Exit Strategy Dream Is My Customer Nightmare   my-notes.dragas.net/2025/... · Posted by u/edent

That's the main reason I avoid using any products from startups. I just know that in a few years, the company will die out or exit, and in both cases product I would rely on will be discontinued, or shittified by the new owner.

The only exceptions are open source products with a healthy community, where I can evaluate their possibility of survival after vendor shutdown, or commodity services, where I can count that I could replace them with something similar with a minimal effort.

Another issue with startups is pivots. Years ago I went all in with my company on a calculator startup, then they pivoted to an AI-focused solution that was so far from their original value prop that they became useless. Left a gap for our customers and that company doesn't seem to be doing well present day.

Stick to what your customers want!

A community around recycling reminds me of the article "We wash our trash to repent for killing God". Like some commenters in this discussion I believe plastic recycling is a distraction at best.

Distraction from what? Yes, taxing plastic/pollutants would be ideal. Designing new biodegradable synthetics would be great.

But this organisation has inarguably done good in the world. There's no need to detract from that.

I have a question about calculator building, if anyone has a suggestion. My industry revolves around quite complicated calculators, with anywhere from 10 to 50 data inputs - and the result are large projection tables and charts.

These still live in excel, but I would love to move then into a web app.

Is there a best practice way to go about this? I've tried basic html forms that pass to python for the number crunching (there are optimisations and Monte Carlos). But it gets so messy as the number of input fields increase. Does a tool exist to simplify this process?

I believe they finally added it in an update last year

Can you elaborate?

Personally, I was also very picky about who I follow, and also only use “Following” (never “For You”) and the only difference I felt with the Elon acquisition is less censorship — which is both good and bad — and makes it more useful as a news source.

jgorn · a year ago
Feel slightly qualified to comment as I've been on twitter since close to Day 1, and also exclusively use Following (despite more aggressive attempts to push the algo feed since Elons purchase)

The #1 reason I had to leave Twitter is the degradation of replies. Prioritising blue ticks ruined any productive conversation in the comments. Much like HN is (imho) most valuable for the comments, old twitter was great for the expertise in the replies - where the cream rose to the top. Now it's impossible or takes a lot of scrolling to find useful dialogue.

It's not perfect, but for now Bluesky is scratching that itch of smart commentary immediately after a post. That was enough to get me to completely move to the platform.

Understand this is targetted at financial planning for startups/SMBs, but I'm curious as to if it could be adapted to work for personal financial planning (retirement wealth projections, modelling market downturns)? Curious if that's a use case you considered or a path the product may go down in the future

I eat pre-mixed Thai curry paste from this brand called "Mae Ploy" with coconut oil, powdered coconut milk, meat (either chicken or beef) and vegetables. There's about five different flavors and for $8 you get a 2 pound bucket of it I have never actually been able to finish one in less than a year.

Turns out I can eat an amazing very low carb meal for about $2 a day and 2-3 minutes of meal prep. It's currently my "meal for life".

If there is a Japanese pre-mixed curry for sale, let me know!

jgorn · 7 years ago
That sounds delicious, I love how much flavour is packed in Thai curry paste. But how can you make a fully cooked curry in 2-3 minutes?

Walking is not time efficient, you're better off doing 10 mins of HIIT than an hour of walking.
jgorn · 8 years ago
If I do HIIT, I'll definitely need a shower which takes time and resources. A 30 min walk? Not as much.

Sometimes the practical solution isn't the most efficient.

That's really well laid out. Less detail than MDN, but that site can be overkill.

Two small pieces of feedback. HTTPS support would be good. Also, when I scroll the list of element and then click on one, I'm taken back to the top of the list - I'd like to stay where I am.

jgorn · 9 years ago
I think a nice feature would be if the description pages linked to the relevant MDN page - for when you want more extensive information about an element.

Otherwise, I love this OP. Will likely use it regularly!
