While most seemed to prefer Counter-strike, my childhood gaming was dominated by an Unreal Tournament mod called Tac Ops. While the games looked similar, the mechanics felt very different than Counter-strike. It was a much faster-paced game.

There were a ton of servers with wacky mods. I spent a ton of time on the low-grav servers. There were also some that made the top-scoring player huge. Those odd game modes were a blast.

EDIT: Also looks like people are still playing!

Wow thats a name I haven't heard in a long time! I really miss the way tacops 2.2 felt, never did get along with 3.x versions. Was definitely a formative gaming experience for me as well

Everything is nicely documented and pretty easy to read.

It's a great companion if you want to learn more about how languages are implemented.

> East coast US seems to be going up about 3mm/year, or a foot per century. That's on top of 7 foot tides.

That's the average rise it you average all data going back to the 1950s.

Unfortunately, looking back to the 50s is only really useful if interested in how much sea levels have already risen. Otherwise it presents an unrealistically optimistic view, as the rate has accelerated since.

Per the article, the east coast (North Carolina) is currently experiencing an increase of about a third of an inch per year, which is an increase of one foot per 36 years, or close to a meter per century.

If current trends continue, this will accelerate, not decelerate.

Don't you feel rude to the other people trying to enjoy their time in the forest for yammering on a work call?

Not as egregious as the mountain bikers who blast music from speakers on the trails as they ride, but still.

What does this mean? Is there a list of approved conversation allowed on trails? What difference does it make if they are talking to someone virtually or physically present on the trail?

Page 3 states that the cost of the Titanic, "fully equipped", was 1.5m pounds sterling.

According to:

https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/monetary-policy/inflation/in...

this equates to around 120m pounds sterling today.

It seems to me that there's no way you could construct anything like her for that amount of money today. I wonder what gives.

jessewmc · 3 years ago
Actually I bet you wouldn't be too far off. Random googling seems to suggest that the average cruise ship today is under $1 billion: https://gangwaze.com/blog/how-much-does-a-cruise-ship-cost

These are _much_ bigger ships than the Titanic, and with much more sophistication, complexity, luxury, etc.

If ships were still as simple today as the Titanic was I imagine 120m pounds would actually be pretty close.

I don't know about you guys but I think its pretty fast. I'm from the UK and got a 34.5ms response time using network tab on safari. I looked up the IP address of the host 151.236.217.16 and the server is located in Amsterdam it seems. I'm guessing if your in the states it would be 150ms? Anyone can confirm out of interest?
jessewmc · 4 years ago
177ms from west coast of NA, but that is slower than I would have estimated. Other than HN, almost everything else I use regularly feels subjectively way slower, although I've not checked response time.

What's a plumber do with 5 trucks?? You can't drive more than one, right?!
jessewmc · 5 years ago
A plumber with five trucks isn't so much a plumber anymore as a business owner employing five other plumbers.

Author here! It feels amazing to have this done and live. I'm happy to talk about whatever you might want to know about it. If you're curious how the sausage was made, I wrote a blog post about taking the web book and bringing it to print and ebook here:

Congrats! Ordered. Been waiting for a physical copy, being able to scribble notes in the margins and bookmark and flip back and forth by hand just works so much better for me.

MOBAs ate them because they have a lower skill floor.

If I understand 50% of how to play a MOBA, I can play the game and have fun. I am gorilla. I have 4 moves: punch, slam, eat banana, and my ultimate ability, get mad. They have cooldowns, but it doesn't matter, I just spam all my moves when I see a bad guy. If I don't see a bad guy, I can kill the enemy turrets and little cpu creatures. If I'm having trouble, I can follow one of my allies and often get into 2v1s which are easier to win. And oh look, he is playing Sword Guy, he's doing pretty well, maybe I should try Sword Guy next time.

If I only understand 50% of how to play an RTS, I'm screwed because I didn't realize that I needed to build a t2 bot factory with my t1 bots, which can then build tier 2 constructor bots which are required to build flak cannons which are the only viable defense against this specific type of gunship-based commander sniping.

I like RTS games better too, but I can see how it can be hard to get into an RTS without a really expensive-to-create campaign tutorial (e.g. Starcraft) and/or a huge time commitment. I bet I could download a MOBA I've never played before and have fun in my first match knowing nothing about how to play it (even the controls).

I think the big problem here was with Starcraft 2's lack of UMS and chat room focus compared to Brood War. I played competitive 1v1 in both, and anecdotally I spent alot more time in Brood War, and much of that time was socializing, playing casual games, and UMS--largely with friends who didn't play competitively.

This community was completely destroyed by SC2, multiplayer really only appealed to serious competitive players. It sucked unless you only wanted to grind ladder. That community kept the game as a whole alive and acted as a gateway.
