This is really dumb. Because the models themselves, like markets, are indeterministic. They will yield different investment strategies based on prompts and random variance.

This is a really dumb measurement.

this is great. I've wanted to build something similar for the trains outside of my flat. I have not been able to find reliable apis for this

I'm finally organising 20 years of voice notes. Some were quite outdated - I probably no longer need the mozzarella cheese I reminded myself to buy in early 2008.

To organize them, I'm writing a Python Qt application with Claude Code. It started off as vibe coding, but I'm now developing it using processes very similar to those I would use when managing software teams. I've picked up a lot of good tips about that here on HN. I've got Whisper, and fallback online services, transcribing the audio and summarizing it and adding tags. After much UI experimentation, I've landed on something that looks not unlike an email client, with tags in the left pane, a center pane which lists transcriptions and notes about each audio file, and a right pane with more detailed information about the selected audio file.

Next step is to serve it all as a model context protocol server - I need to pick an agent.

Do you have any recommendations for younger devs like myself, who have been surrounded by hustle culture & everyone being a founder?

I personally love the craft, but battle the entrepreneur in my brain telling me not to waste time learning things that won't bring tangible value.

I am an iOS user and I really need this. I love the Youtube App, but I can't stand having it auto open to shorts... They are truly mining my brain through this action.

jacktheturtle commented on Ask HN: Any active COBOL devs here? What are you working on?    · Posted by u/_false

I’m not a COBOL dev but I work with mainframes(z/OS). Most COBOL applications I’ve seen have been banking and insurance related with few exceptions. Most of them either run as a series of batch jobs or via transaction managers like IMS and CICS. Backends are usually sequential files(we call them datasets),DB2,VSAM(Virtual Storage Access Method) or DL/1(hierarchical DB that’s part of IMS). Quite a few places I’ve seen have run IBM MQ as well.

If changes are made to these systems it’s often due to changes in regulation or driven by changes in the business(new financial products being offered etc.

Off-topic: I’ve seen quite a few mainframe related posts on HN fly by over the years. I’ve been meaning to create an account and participate but I’ve only gotten around to it just now.
