itscodingtime commented on Stoop Coffee: A simple idea transformed my neighborhood   supernuclear.substack.com... · Posted by u/surprisetalk

This comment comes across a little dismissive, but this was my exact thought.

What if the people doing this were of another socioeconomic class and were drinking malt liquor? Or even if not imbibing, just smoking a black and mild.

Very interesting thought experiment.

itscodingtime · a year ago
Not a thought experiment. Black people do this or something similar all the time. It’s called loitering or “making the neighborhood look bad”

It very much is. They will magically start listening to their users again, or fall by the way-side to be replaced, just like chrome.

Business running shit needs to stop.

> should have the right to choose a locked-down ecosystem if that's what they want

You will continue to have that right.

Simply don't install other app stores.

What you won't be able to do is force other people to do what you want them to do, with their iPhones.

It has nothing to do with you choosing what you want to do with your own phone.

Instead, you want to force restrictions onto other people's phones.

> this balance don't seem at all designed to help consumers

It's designed to give those who want it, the ability to control all phones that they own.

Few people would have a problem with you being given the option to lock down your phone if that's what you want.

He will lose the sense of security from interacting with other iPhone users which Apple’s walled garden currently provides. The existence of third party appstores on iOS mean I can no longer be sure that an app on an another person iPhone is safe. There’s 100 percent going to be a zero day delivered through these third party Appstores which will spread to iOS devices without any third party AppStore’s installed.

This whole situation seems Kafkaesque. Apple sold billions of iOS devices because party because of the experience they were offering. People like me sort that experience out. Now people saying are that no, that experience was anti consumer.

There’s less choice in the mobile smart phone space because of this. I have no idea why people want iOS to be Android when there’s already Android. And apparently Google’s Android model isn’t good enough either.

Is there anyone else who doesn't support either side of this conflict? They've been fighting each other for over 100 years. They both want the same piece of land. It's on them to figure it out. People around the world don't need to 'pick a side'. We can protest for both sides to sort their shit out, and not drag the rest of us into it.
itscodingtime · 2 years ago
I agree with that line of thought too, but one side is sort of represented a terrorist organization who have the ability to murder 1200 people and kidnap others while the other is a western democracy that has the ability kill 30k people as collateral damage level. The collateral damage is so high but people like Sam Harris is saying Israel is engaging in a restrained manner compared to other powers previous retaliatory actions to terrorism.

>What do these targeted people do then? Switching phones?

When you can get a $130 Motorola that has better security... Yes.

Since the 2018 iphone crack by the FBI, I am shocked anyone uses their iphone for secrets.

Is there a modern smartphone or cellphone the fbi, cia, nsa any nation state can not hack ?

I can guarantee you the fbi can also hack a $130 motorolla.

People can replace doom strolling or social media usage with some reading but after a certain point you will also need to give up certain hobbies or other activities to be as prolific as some other readers. Yeah you could spend one hour reading over playing that new online game with your friend or watching that new drama with your spouse but then you aren’t socializing. Or maybe you really care about flexibility so you spend the extra hour you have in the evening doing mobility drills and yoga. Or maybe you are trying to not fall behind the AI craze in tech so you spend an hour reading about the latest models and experimenting with them. Point is the person reading for one hour also isn’t doing what you doing. There’s also this underlying assumption that reading is always productive when there’s a lot of low quality content that’s easily consumed. Not every book is East of Eden.

I love HN, it's one of the few places you can get reasoned conversation online.

But this is one of those subjects where it gets weird.

SBF was directly responsible for millions, if not billions, of direct monetary loss to identified individuals. Yet the top comments on HN are all discussing whether incarceration is retribution, spite, deterrence, or rehabilition.

The USA incarcerates people for tiny financial damages at a higher rate than anywhere else in the world. $20 of theft? 5 years away, no problem. $1 billion: well we should consider what we're trying to achieve here...

If the USA is going to be consistent in sentencing then just fucking kill him.

Or reconsider and free the thousands of black dudes serving ridiculous sentences for minor crimes.

It’s almost night and day compared to when Bob Lee was murdered and they thought vagrant or some other (insert stereotype here) was the culprit. Remember how tough on crime this crowd was then ? Remember the silence and lack of thought pieces when it turned out to be someone he knew instead of some brown person or drug addict ?
