hurryer commented on Grid operator to interfere in Finnish electricity market after bidding error   reuters.com/business/ener... · Posted by u/vincnetas

It is a pretty fundamental flaw in market implementation if producers can bid significantly more than they can physically provide. We (other European country grid operator) run checks on every submitted market order to ensure it is both physically reasonable and that there is equivalent resources on the market to buy/sell to the order. Hopefully the market operator can learn from this mistake in giving market participants such a large foot gun.

Why can't they just remove the wrong bid from the market? And redo the auction or use a reasonable average?

It seems they treat this as an irreversible mistake.

Why don't you start a nice free thing for us to enjoy freely.

Discovered SomaFM thanks to HN and in love with the SF 10-33 (SF police scanner mixed with ambient).

For those of you loving the “deeply-focused and manually curated music channel” vibe, I can only recommend to check out Digitally Imported (di.fm), which I started listening for free and turned into a paying user for years now. They now own many apps, each featuring its own music style (electronic music, jazz, classical, rock, zen, etc.).

Some live shows are popping up from time to time, adding a bit of “social experience” on top, but the overall feeling I have is exactly the same as the people commenting there: what a pleasure to just log on a very specialized channel fitting your current listening needs and only have quality sounds fulfilling those needs. No add, no commercial tune, no fuss: only rare versions of quality music organized in extremely consistent channels.

Friends at home for a relaxed moment? Why not tuning to “Late night jazz”? Aggressive repetitive coding: “Goa Psy Trance” will put you in the proper “copy-paste” mood. Long driving session: “Deep progressive” that is!

Apart from pleasing your ears, the valuable outcome (at a time of AI-propelled tracklists that will only push you to listen to the same mainstream music as your neighbours) is that you’ll gradually build a sense of what you like exactly, and when you like it exactly.

DI.fm is no longer freely listenable, they severely limited the free offering.

Snaps move the packaging burden from the distribution to the software maker, which is how it should be. It's the only scalable way.

Imagine Microsoft having to package the millions of distinct Windows applications.

Somewhere very recently I encountered a quote from Ansel Adams, in which he seemed to anticipate that "electronic" photos would be the next big thing, in (IIRC) 1980. Wish I could find that again. Seemed remarkably prescient.

In early 2000 a lot of photographers were saying that digital photography is not "real", it doesn't have a "soul", it should not be allowed in photo contests and it's just worthless in general.

This is a good a place as any to ask about weird sensory experiences at night.

Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night, and while my eyes are open there is an instantaneous change in my vision equivalent to wearing coloured fillers or monochrome LED lighting. Usually red. No other symptoms. Transition was instant so that rules out retinal bleeding etc.

I asked my doctor about this, she didn't know either.

Are you absolutely sure this is not a dream?

One trick a psychologist mentioned is having a notepad near the bed and writing in it when it happens.

Weirdly enough, this sort of lines up with a theory posted on 4chan 4 days ago. The gist being that if the version is formally declared AGI, it can't be licensed to Microsoft and others for commercial gain. As a result Altman wants it not to be called AGI, other board members do.

Archived link below. NB THIS IS 4CHAN - THERE WILL OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE.

IMO this is nonsense.

How about the following preventions:

1 - make sure MI has no actors (by this logic LLMs are safe)

2 - make sure MI doesn't get control over it's energy supply (so we can always starve it)

Easy, easy to verify, and we can in the meantime do something useful instead of the equivalent of discussing the potential risks of cars while living in the stone age.

Update to the replies:

1. "No actors" means it's like a person in prison - has the smartest person ever been able to socially engineer its way out of prison? No, it might have escaped with the help of social engineering but still actors were needed.

2. There's a plug for every machine we use. There is simply no way without actors to "work around" that.

Once we have generally capable robots that can fix stuff / solder things / push buttons AND those robots are controlled by an AI then we can start discussing.

However, this is not now, nor is it in the next 5 years.

Chimps be like: don't fear the humans, we're more powerful than them and we'll control the banana supply.

We have no reason to believe either LeCunn or Altman are reckless. This is just lazy thinking. Basically, failing to position themselves securely in the doomer camp by constantly signalling their commitment to doomer doctrine, they have already disqualified themselves from being considered responsible. No need to back the claim with evidence - they haven't demonstrated unquestioning dedication to the cult.

What would be evidence of the risks? The first million dead?

the article on how ai could be harmful seems more like people trying to use the tool (LLM) to do evil things. You can also do evil things with other tools than AI.
