It’s pretty depressing to see every ostensibly American value be replaced by profit-driven utilitarianism. “It improves X problem marginally and it makes money, so why not?” seems to be the reasoning for just about everything anymore. No discussion of values, of the society we want to build, or anything else. That’s the world the tech industry is building.

This country literally had a civil war to prevent rich capitalists from owning other human beings. America’s “values” have always been rooted in profit-driven utilitarianism.

You were in such a haste to share our opinion that you didn't address any point I made.

If you want to weaken Iran, you need to empower the Arab states since the Sunni-Shia split is one of their points of contention. Instead, America lets Israel bomb them and proves Iran's point that America & Israel are unreliable allies at best, or enemies of Muslims at worst.

I think LIDAR was and maybe still is way more expensive. Initially running 75k. Now they're more around 10k which is better.

The new electric Volvos have LIDAR, proving that the technology has (at least now) approached mass-market feasibility.

Film chemistry involves a lot of emulsions does it not?
hoytschermerhrn · 4 months ago
Yes, exactly. Apparently the chemistry for film emulsion is very similar to what’s needed for skin applications. I think a lot of companies would not be so forward-thinking, so I give them a lot of credit here.

Fujifilm was able to make a massive comeback with a big pivot towards chemical. They're the best at making anything film-related, including a lot of stuff the pharma industry needs. The camera division is extremely profitable due to the Instax golden goose: great marketing, stellar margins both on the cameras and the consumables.

Somewhat surprisingly, they’ve also successfully diversified into high-end skincare, applying their chemical expertise to moisturizer forumulations and whatnot.

Unfortunately, so do ticks... (grass blades)

I don’t believe we have ticks in the same way that the east coast has lime disease-carrying ticks though?

You really shouldn’t be breaking any bits in wood without really trying.

Bits need to be sharp, spun at the correct speed, and plunged into the material without putting side to side stress on the bit (Which is why a drill press is so useful)

hoytschermerhrn · 7 months ago
As an old-home owner and a hobbyist woodworker, I can confirm that it’s not user error — old-growth timber really is that dense. Even my impact driver struggles to drill simple holes sometimes.

Hit me this morning they never showed anyone working with files.

Can’t believe after the failed attempts to kill files on iPhone and iPad they’ve learned nothing and still think we can pretend a professional work tool can exist without a proper file system.

Not saying it should have desktop icons strewn across your living room, just that the “files siloed in apps transferring via share buttons” iPad model is objectively productivity hell and puts mental load menu fumbling where MacOS is instinctive drag and drop.

You’ve posted a 3-paragraph rant on a baseless assumption for a product which hasn’t been released yet. Let’s all withhold judgement until we have more information about how this truly works.

Is it still possible for the average person to access GPT-4?
hoytschermerhrn · 3 years ago
V4 is baked into Bing Chat. I believe paid OpenAI accounts also have access.
