hellweaver666 commented on Adafruit: Arduino’s Rules Are ‘Incompatible With Open Source’   thenewstack.io/adafruit-a... · Posted by u/MilnerRoute

Adafruit is pretty clearly the front-runner these days in the educational/hobbyist market, Arduino (and even SparkFun) have fallen by the wayside. My only gripe is the focus on micropython these days, it can introduce a barrier later in the learning process when you eventually need to leave the nicely organized sandbox. They still support the “Arduino” C++ libraries, but uPy is the default.

Adafruit actually focus on CircuitPython which is a fork of Micro Python but takes some of the complexity of Micro Python away. I don't personally like coding in C++ as I started my career with Perl then PHP and Javascript. Writing Python in my own choice of text editor instead of the Arduino IDE is much more my style.

In one of the BBC articles when talking about the ghost gun in his possession, they have added "possibly 3d printed". This is the only place I have seen this mentioned and it's really annoying because there is already enough rhetoric about 3d printed guns and various groups trying to regulate 3d printers, the last thing we need is something as big as this for them to attach to!

I'm sure this is very interesting but given that you decided to use light grey text on a white background the whole page was unreadable.
hellweaver666 commented on A common urban intersection in the Netherlands (2018)   bicycledutch.wordpress.co... · Posted by u/itronitron

I'm not sure how common this type of intersection is. I live and bike daily in Amsterdam and it took me about a minute to fully understand what's going on here. The picture seems to show a special case where the intersecting road is bike only, and instead of the normal painted arrows that show where bikes should queue up when making a left, there's an open area off to the left where one would wait behind the "shark teeth".

FYI if you are ever biking here in NL, the thing to remember is that if the "haaientanden" point at you, watch out!, as that means you do not have the right of way.

Edit: The side roads are for cars as well, which means you have a strange turning lane in the middle of the intersection where traffic might back up. A simple roundabout seems like a much better solution here unless the goal is to keep cars moving quickly and the turn lane is rarely used.

Fellow Amsterdam resident here, this kind of layout is very common all over the city (I live in the south of the city but I have seen these all over).

I'm in a similar situation, but no hardware involved. Just the flexibility to juggle the kids at pick up times is godsend.

I have much better no-interruption stretches of programming which yields better results overall.

Same here, thanks to me working from home my wife has been able to return to work (she's a teacher) which has given us more income (and less costs!) and massively improved our financial position!

Companies like Amazon literally own billions in office space. Making that space valuable again with RTO policies, especially if you create an RTO trend, a way of enabling them to sell at their previous values.

Do they actually "own" it? I work for a large company who spent millions building a new office and then immediately sold it to a different company so they could lease it instead of owning it (apparently this looks better on the books!)

I had a similar situation with my shutter blinds. The company wanted €500 to install a "smart hub" to enable voice control instead of their little remote. To hell with that, I ordered a couple of servos and an esp8266 and 3d printed some little fingers that would press the buttons on the remote and added the whole thing to HomeAssistant via ESPHome. Cost me less than €30.

I remember back in the early 00's someone at work found out about my blog and news got around the office (it was a personal blog, more like a diary and I was in my late teens so it was kinda "edgy"). Anyways... within a few days I started getting a bunch of troll comments and it took all the fun out of it knowing everything I wrote was being read by my colleagues.
