Am I reading the chart wrong, or does it show that the S&P500 ex-top 10 stocks increased by 20% over 3 years? That would be a historically average and very reasonable return.

Unless you do drones only on your private property, they are inherently a creepy, invasive technology (even though I think they're super cool and like playing with them, too)
hazmazlaz · 20 days ago
Do you think that airplanes, helicopters, and balloons are also inherently a creepy, invasive technology as well? Because from the perspective of capturing imaging data from the air there is really no functional difference between those and UAS...

Thanks for the kind words. Sorry about that, we are working out some of the initial experience for Ollama.

The need to start a chat for a model that is not currently downloaded in order to initiate a download confused me for a minute the first time I tried it out. A more intuitive approach (which is the first thing I tried to do before I figured it out) might be to make the download icons in the model list clickable, to initiate a download. Then you could display a download progress bar in the list, and when models have been downloaded show a little "info" icon that is also clickable to display the model card, surface other model specific options, and enable deletion. Love the new UI, kudos!
hazmazlaz commented on Ask HN: Why is "Tea" still on the App Store after so many data breaches?    · Posted by u/benguild

The same reason that Microsoft products are still in the App Store after so many breaches. Because having a security breach is not part of the App Store equation.

Why not be bold and name those nine households? I think the public deserves to know who in their community is hoarding all of the wealth.

I use Obsidian with the ReadItLater extension[1]. Works great for my purposes.

The unspoken, rarely acknowledged element of this story and other valuation stories is the devaluation of the US Dollar. That certainly contributes to the trend of record valuation after record valuation.

Part of me feels like the state should prevent people from building in places like this but we already do so much of that people end up just living in RVs and parking them in places like this which is worse.

I wish I had better ideas.

hazmazlaz · 2 months ago
The state requires flood insurance for property that is in a defined flood area, and that insurance is sometimes either quite expensive or in some cases just not available at all.

My first experience with passkeys was eBay. They implemented them 3-4 years ago, and my password manager, Dashlane picked up on it. They offered to save it and I wouldn’t have to enter a username or password. Great, seemed to work. Until I needed to login on another device and then Dashlane saved that passkey too, but each passkey was tied to the specific device… only it wasn’t clear when I logged in which passkey I should choose, and chose the wrong one and it doesn’t work. After having like 6 different passkeys for eBay I gave up. Now I always decline to use passkeys. They don’t work, idk who uses them but as a fairly tech savvy user, without a very complex setup (chrome, with Dashlane installed) if it’s not working for me it’s probably just not working.

I’ll also add. I don’t have a good mental model for what a passkey is or how it works. And again, like most users if I don’t really understand what’s going on I’m just not gonna bother with it. For all the complexity that it takes to implement secure login with a username and password, most of it is hidden from the user, with passkeys it feels like they’re shoving all the complexity front and center, but not explaining any of it.

That's just a problem with how Dashlane and/or eBay implemented Passkeys. I have tons of site passkeys (1 per site) saved with 1password and use them across multiple devices just fine.

[edit] all lies - I got my wires crossed, free tier for Workspace isn't yet supported. sorry. you need to set the project and pay. this is WIP.

Workspace users [edit: cperry was wrong] can get the free tier as well, just choose "More" and "Google for Work" in the login flow.

It has been a struggle to get a simple flow that works for all users, happy to hear suggestions!

hazmazlaz · 2 months ago
How about a binary - either you subscribe to Gemini or you don't. Rate limits or gates for higher tier models/capabilities, that you can upgrade to unlock. Think Small/Medium/Large. Anything more complicated than this is immensely annoying to both consumers and enterprise customers. For power users/nonconformists, include a pay as you go option using credits or cost per action that has access to all capabilities out of the box.
