The Rust drama is an uncommon failure of leadership for Torvalds. Instead of decisively saying "no, never" or "yes, make it so," he has consistently equivocated on the Rust issue. Given the crisis of confidence among a sizeable (and very vocal) contingent of the Linux community, that decision has backfired horribly. And it's quite out of character for Linus not to have a blazingly clear opinion. (We all know his stance on C++, for instance.)

As a pilot program, R4L should have graduated or ended a long time ago. After several years of active development, its status remains unclear. Instead of cracking heads to get everyone on the same page, Linus has instead spent all this time sitting back and watching his subordinates fight amongst themselves, only to then place responsibility for the drama on Martin's shoulders. Poor form.

Arguably his reprimand of Martin is a clear signal that he will never show Rust any favor, but he hasn't said anything explicitly. Maybe he knows he should, but he fears the shitstorm it will cause. Maybe it's time for him to rip off the band-aid, though.

And again, all of this could have been avoided if he'd just put his foot down one way or the other. Imagine how much time and energy (even just Martin's alone) could have been saved if Linus had just said "no, keep it downstream".

I agree with all statement from Linus. Keep it separated/downlined project I think is the best for both worlds.

> Flutter is truly a piece of great tech with remarkable quality and value.

How does it compare to React Native from user and developer experience perspectives? Are there other competitors?

hadad · 10 months ago
For xplat is same concept, compile to native code on multiple target system.

The other xplat framework same as Flutter:

- React Native

- Kotlin Multiplatform

- NET MAUI

- NativeScript

- Slint

It's better in most ways, for example, just recently LG decided to rewrite its TV apps from RN to Flutter

https://webostv.developer.lge.com/news/2024-07-15-new-and-su...

> Most of our apps use React. When we first adopted React, we were pleased with the development productivity it provided, but sadly its initial performance was subpar in terms of start-up time, memory consumption, and responsiveness. After significant and complicated optimizations we reached performance benchmarks that were good enough, and yet we desired a new technology that was both fast and simple.

> To our delight, our very first prototype with Flutter easily exceeded our target benchmarks! Without any optimization whatsoever, our Flutter rewrite launched twice as fast as our original app, consumed less runtime memory, and felt more responsive and playful to use

Misleading on the comment, LG WebOS is using EnactJS (Framework on top of ReactJS) + Chromium Embedded Browser, not native, just webapp on browser.

But React Native is different , JS code compiled to native code using c/c++ compiler on target system. Flutter also do like this one.

Embedded browser is slower than native app, because extra browser layer than native one.

What is the endgoal for WpEngine.I am not following the drama closely.

1.Are they legally in the clear?(Note:Legally)

2.Can they rebrand to something other than Wp?

hadad · a year ago
the 'wp' word never been legally trademarked. The usage is okay until Sep 24th [1], but becoming problematic since the king mad [2]

Oh god, this gave me a minor heart attack. We are using over 20 ACF fields for 150+ sites. I thought it was completely out of the WordPress ecosystem. I am glad they have the zip download and continuing auto updates.

EDIT: I confirm our ACF plugins on sites are all switched to secure custom fields. This is so shady, it broke our snippets because we are using prepend and append texts to wrap our field values. Now they are all broken and we have to update all our sites (also our client's sites). Let's see what comes next...

EDIT2: There goes my Sunday. I received our first ticket regarding broken homepage widgets. I have to sit down and update every site one by one. Thank you Matt Mullenweg for ruining my Sunday plans.

The support notice got deleted[1]. The plugin developer got banned. Blocking access from certain ip. Shady or problematic hosting term[2]. I think hosting your code on wordpress.org is considered dangerous.
