+1! You can try to apply morals to companies in an internationally competitive environment all you want, but it ain't gonna happen. The only way to ensure they can't play governments against each other is to effectively make a cartel. How you'd get over the collective action problem and prevent countries from defecting is beyond me though, would probably need something like the OECD to pass a resolution.

Most current tax havens are UK dependencies, so such an agreement would have a significant impact. Additionally, individual countries could do something like what the US does with its citizens - if you've paid a sensible amount of tax abroad, great; if not, pay the difference here. You can locate wherever you want, but relocating to save on taxes becomes moot.

The UK doesn't benefit from protecting these dependencies and we're a change of government away from seeing them all brought to heel.

A world where an offline, encrypted data file offers exactly the same security level as an offline, encrypted memory cell.

You invoke side channels -- what about these side channels: https://jochen-hoenicke.de/trezor-power-analysis/

"The new firmware 1.3.3 is immune against this attack since it (1) requires a PIN to compute the public key and (2) uses branch-free computations for deriving the public key from the private key."

Out of interest, is there any movement between your offices? For example - if I started with you in London, would it be possible to transfer to the SF office using an L1 visa?
hackerboos commented on OVH increases pricing with the rise of their next generation DDoS Protection   sinfulforums.net/t/ovh-in... · Posted by u/dx034

OVH already put up a mandatory DDOS protection in 2013, with about the same price (article about the feature states 0.5 to 10€ per server : https://www.nextinpact.com/news/81703-ovh-protection-ddos-ca...).

Before that, sites that were the target of a DDOS often were simply disabled and their subscriptions cancelled.

At the time the practice raised a lot of criticism, since that was presented as an "option" that you could not refuse to pay for, which seemed a bit forceful. Now they're being more honest, the need to protect from DDOS has a cost, especially considering that a DDOS makes a lot of collateral damage and it is needed to protect innocent bystanders. Everyone pays a little bit, and those who actually need protection don't have to pay anything more. Maybe they've taken some inspiration from the French socialized health system :)

Hetzner used to have a bad rep for simply disabling accounts of people getting DDoSd. The have recently claimed to have improved on this https://www.hetzner.com/unternehmen/ddos-schutz

I prefer getting a really powerful workstation and doing virtualization from there. Example: http://natex.us/enthoo-128kit

(No affiliation with Natex, but I've bought that kit and I enjoy the overkill of 16 cores and 128gb of RAM)

I don't know much about Zcoin. Looks promising if the description is to be believed.

This article mentions Zcash, which means that folks will be showing up shortly to talk about Monero.
hackerboos · 8 years ago
Every crypto-currency has it's zealots but that's not to detract from what Snowden said about Monero, labelling it "amateur crypto".

Ring signatures have been around longer than zk-snarks so time will tell on that comment.

I do however believe Zcash could be doing a better job for privacy, notably by mandating private transactions once the new "JUBJUB"optimizations have been merged [0].
