> That said, we are at a point where people are overweight enough that getting exercise has its own risks, and taking a medication that allows you to be more active is likely to cancel out some of those downsides.

And yet we rarely ask or say "maybe I should just eat fewer calories?" Unless you have some other disorder that prevents normal bodily function, that does work (and would be viable I'd imagine for the majority of people being prescribed).

But it requires patience and discipline which are basically non-existent for the majority of the population.

As someone who has been fat and not-fat throughout my life, I think literally everyone knows that it is simple to lose weight by eating fewer calories. That does not mean it is easy. If you are already fat, which can happen almost without you noticing by eating 200-300 calories too much a day over a year say, or as a result of some brain malfunction (both have happened to me), then eating the calorie deficit require to lose weight is mentally very hard to to.

As a thought experiment, imagine what you eat per day. Now halve it. Would you be having a good time?

That's quite a lot of European countries to be fair.

What is a "a 200 Euro guitar and a 250 Euro amplifier" setup that you recommend? Honest question.
gtr · 3 months ago
Not sure about the amp, but the Yamaha Pacifica I have is decent. It's been used in a stage show successfully (not played by me), and the artist was very happy with it.

I think the point is that elderly people are fairly sentient so you don't have to worry about them doing dumb things like darting out in front of a semi truck like you do with kids so there's no reason to warn drivers about a high density of them since they behave like normal pedestrians if perhaps a bit slower.

I think it's more to warn a motorist to be mindful of slow moving people. And older people do occasionally fall over too.

This 100%. I taught myself *everything* in college. I relied on textbooks and online resources to teach myself the material outside of class. It worked pretty well. I wasn't the top of my class, nor have I retained all the things I've learned (but who does?).

Fortunately, what I have retained is the ability to pick up almost any subject and learn about it on my own. That's more important than anything they can teach you in a classroom.

I think that is one of the things that you are supposed to learn at college, in my experience.

Interesting. The excess deaths from graph looks to be ~500,000 to 600,000, not the 1,000,000 that is claimed.
gtr · 3 years ago
I guess half a million people dying is fine then.

I used to mod /r/MUD on reddit - if you fancy getting back into MUDs that's a great place to start.

For my sins, I became very addicted to Shades on Prestel back in the day. Due to this, I prefer MUDs that are not deep on class progression, and just easy fun.

A lot of the still running MUDs have deep learning curves, due to some of them having been running for a good few decades. To the new or casual player, this makes them impregnable.

Whereas I don't think we need to change the beauty of the text based medium, I do think that the genre needs updating to make new MUDs more accessible.... Even D&D finally accepted it needed to simplify again to gain new players.

I remember playing Shades an awful lot as a young teen. That was until my parents saw the phone bill!

On a practical level, the author had awful blisters and heel pain because she was wearing trainers on a thru-hike?!

Get some proper hiking boots!

gtr · 5 years ago
I should imagine an experience outdoors person like her would be able to choose appropriate footwear! Boots are heavy and don't protect you from blisters either.
