Shouldn't it be API rather than protocol?

Also my sympathies for having to support the so-called "S3 standard/protocol".

1. There are OSes that are “open” and still reliable.

2. OP was talking about loading apps on his/her OWN phone. Apple could offer some “OS variant” or some settings for people like OP while the default is closed for people like you. This doesn’t seem mutually exclusive technically — it’s probably just not in apple business best interests.

As past threads on this topic have shown, iPhone users prefer Apple be the controller of the device than the device owner itself. It is somehow understandable, but it is position I've often seen espoused.

I didn't understand this. Who is the author referring to, and what is he implying?

What about Webkit?

gime_tree_fiddy · 4 years ago
Not sure average individual can take webkit source and turn it into a browser.

Forcing users to a prebuilt Webkit, that they cannot change is definitely not the same.

Nope, They have a single digit percentage market share in India. Whether that is shipment or actual usage. So in order to have a lower price / import tax they need to start manufacturing more components in India.
gime_tree_fiddy · 4 years ago
I think this will be an interesting development. Give the high $-to-INR rate, and prices of apple products, it will always be a hard sell. Indian consumers won't be eager to spend multiple paychecks on iPhones and don't see Apple dropping prices. Unstoppable force, meet immovable object.

I am not sure why they are making this move, what are their goals for doing so.

Maybe there should be more of a notice, but when I tried it with my son’s account I got some notifications.

Having said all that the default will be for most school accounts… all or nothing. Don’t allow them to manage it and you won’t get in.

gime_tree_fiddy · 4 years ago
Can't speak for OP, but generally this is mentioned during the sign in process, so it should be laid out. It is effectively all or nothing.

OP didn't mention that the child's account is a secondary account. AFAIK if you log-in with an account the first time on a fresh(ly reset) chromebook, it becomes the "administrator" account - and at the same time if its in an organization (i.e. the school) the orgs policies are applied. No clue how that interacts if you do attempt to login such account as a second account, it's possible the org can require an account to be in control of the device. Chromebooks are deeply designed for exactly this centrally managed scenario after all, that's (partly) why they are so popular with schools and companies.
gime_tree_fiddy · 4 years ago
I think it works similarly on Android phones. Google policy for the Android Corp devices requires you to set it up using corp account, then add secondary personal accounts(if needed).

I hated taking the SAT/ACT, but holy cow are we in the US in a better situation than Chinese students dealing with the Gaokao. A Chinese pen-pal once showed me some calculus problems from the Gaokao and the example I saw (a bunch of integrals) looked like a math test a sadist would create: long, complicated expressions just for the sake of complexity, "ugly" numbers that turned into messy fractions you have to carry around. I (a graduate engineering student at the time) couldn't identify any trick or educational point to the complexity, only the malice of the people giving the test.

EDIT: wording

gime_tree_fiddy · 4 years ago
I am not sure how it compares but India suffers through the same problem. It is essentially a rat race. A lot of those problems could be trick questions, but to be able to identify it, especially on a regular basis takes longer(when the question has less than a minute dedicated to it).

Almost all of the SoCal police departments (LAPD, LASD, San Bernardino Sheriffs) are out of control, with massive, sprawling budgets (the city of Los Angeles gives more money to police than any other category and just added more money for the next year after their "defunding" in 2020) and a complete lack of oversight.

Villanueva, in charge of the LA County Sheriff's Department, has refused to participate in basic oversight or accountability from the LA County Board of Supervisors and routinely oversteps his legal boundaries in dealing with issues (his bizarre "sweeps" in Venice, as one example).

The police are an uncontrollable force in this country and will only grow more violent and brazen in their actions as public trust continues to erode.

gime_tree_fiddy · 4 years ago
I feel like a much needed accountability reset of police departments across the country got sidelined, after the BLM protests(George Floyd) that erupted turned into a call for abolishing them. I don't want to abolish them, and would be willing to fund them even more with better trainings in exchange for better accountability. The subsequent actions would've even fulfilled some of the asks of the protestors. The ideological asks kinda ruined it.

I live in NJ where weed is legal but you can't buy it (legally) so we are sort of in a weird spot.

anyway, it makes me really not care about ordering weed on the dark web from CA. if the feds catch it, its an ounce of weed to a residence, they don't care and im not gonna go in front of some federal judge on federal drug crimes. if CA or NJ catch it, its legal there, who cares.

but the site I use uses an escrow system where if you don't get the product or if you aren't satisfied you can file a complaint. i've never used it as i always have gotten what i've ordered but it is pretty odd.

gime_tree_fiddy · 4 years ago
I thought NJ legalized to the level of CA, where you can there are dispensaries and stuff, no?
