This was costing Matt nothing. Zero.

The work was being done, for free, by passionate people.

The person leading it stepped down. Matt then stopped the initiative presumably because it didn't seem worth picking someone new.

Custom fit lightweight wheelchairs are expensive. My Ti-Lite (one of the most popular lightweight chair brands) Aero Z starts at $3k and goes up quickly with wheels and backrest and casters and various other options that I need for sitting 16 hours a day without creating more problems. Insurance covers this for me every 5 years, but of course that's not a luxury every one has. Most plans don't cover DME 100%.

What Zack and Cambry are doing is great.

(edit) I’d like to add that I think part of being able to drive costs down is that they’re not offering these via insurance so they sidestep the need for FDA approval to market it as a medical device (hence the company name), CMS approval and HCPCS coding and all the regulatory costs that come with that.

Now don't get me started on power wheelchair cost...

Ya, I was expecting to see something not very impressive at that link, but was pleasantly surprised. My chair is about $7k and while this one doesn't look like it would work for me, it is definitely much better than the cheap hospital chairs.

Cool, thanks for the link. I wonder how much of Automattic's board is made up of Matt's personal friends. He'd best hope it's a majority.

note that in the US they have 2 weeks vacations per year, so even with 3 months sabbatical less than in Europe
gibrown · 2 years ago
This isn't true at all. The vacation policy is "Our time off policy is short: take the time that you need" and "There is no minimum or maximum, but we encourage you to take at least 25 days of time off per year".

Appreciate that you wrote this up. As someone just wrapping up a sabbatical where I have ignored a lot of what is going on this looks helpful. Thanks!

Not only that but unauthenticated access is the easiest thing to cache. There is no need to "bring large numbers of servers online". He's lying.
gibrown · 2 years ago
A bot scraping content will tend to go deep into the archives and hit all content systematically. Caching isn't as effective if you hit everything whereas real users will tend to hit the same content over and over again.

It can add nontrivial load.

gibrown commented on Grand jury votes to indict Donald Trump   nytimes.com/live/2023/03/... · Posted by u/m1
alsaaro · 3 years ago
Remember, a Grand Jury indicted John Edwards, a vice-Presidential candidate, for essentially the same thing Trump is being accused of -- that is using campaign funds to hide an affair.

Prior to Edward's indictment he was thought be the future of the democratic party, if Edwards was convicted on all counts he faced up the 30 years in prison, he beat the charges though -- a rarity in federal prosecutions.

So there is precedent for indictments for this particular crime, not that this should matter, in a republic everyone is subject to the same law and jurisprudence.

Sounds like there are 34 counts of falsifying business records so it is probably more than just that one payoff.

Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos by Strogatz

Chaos theory and deterministic systems are a fascinating vantage point for thinking about the dynamics of large computer systems. Thinking of them as stochastic systems is sometimes useful, but most of the systems are actually just operating in unstable periodic processes which are much closer to being a chaotic system rather than a stochastic system. This influences how I think about testing and debugging large distributed systems.

I will say, I'm not sure I could have learned it well without a class and a good professor. The author has a number of books though and is a professor at Cornell.

So really it boils down to attribution, therefore if GitHub were to disclose attribution to all the copyright owners of the code used to train the model, then this issue will be mute.

It will be a long list, but just a list.

gibrown · 3 years ago
And there is a list right?
