My money is on massive overexposure to high fructose corn syrup in the Western diet.

Sugar is 50:50 fructose:sugar and "high"-fructose sugar is 55:45. The slight difference in fructose:sugar between the two is not significant in terms of health outcomes, unless you mean sugar in general.

Particulate matter is relatively large particles, so far as air pollution goes. Think things like soot or smoke, rather than specific chemicals. Burning wood and coal produces far more particulates than, say, natural gas or gasoline-gas.
freshpots · a month ago
They're not necessarily large, and the worst for humans is small particulate which gets into the bloodstream through lungs, PM2.5.

https://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/indoors/air/pmq_a.ht...

Breathing in unhealthy levels of PM2.5 can increase the risk of health problems like heart disease, asthma, and low birth weight. Unhealthy levels can also reduce visibility and cause the air to appear hazy.

Outdoor sources include vehicle exhaust, burning wood, gas and other fuels, and fires. Particle pollution can also travel long distances from its source; for example from wildfires hundreds of miles away. Outdoor particle pollution levels are more likely to be higher on days with little or no wind or air mixing.

Spoken like a true project manager that every engineer hates.
freshpots · 8 months ago
Are you an actual engineer with a degree and subsequent accreditation through a professional body? or an "engineer" by role? Those mean very different things depending on country, quality of education and skills or...how many Microsoft Points you have.

Training GPT-4 used (claimed) 62GW-h over 100 days, for an average of 26MW. Rest of your comment follows from this error.

26MW is a fraction of the primary power consumed by a single passenger aircraft, by the way. It is an absolutely trivial energy input.

freshpots · 10 months ago
It is not trivial at all, it's the same energy used as about 9,000 homes and roughly 50-100 L/s of water wasted to evaporative cooling of said hardware.

"The Dongfang Electric Corporation's 26 MW offshore wind turbine is the largest in the world, surpassing previous models like the Mingyang 20 MW turbine. This turbine's larger size and capacity enable it to generate about 100 GWh of electricity annually, potentially powering 55,000 Chinese homes or 9,200 American homes."

Reposting because my previous comment was unjustly flagged: The US just facilitated a genocide in the previous administration. This is not just me saying this - this is the consensus ruling of the International Court of Justice at the UN.

Barring all of the hyperbole of your comment, I find it astounding how you're unaware of this with such a "thumb on the pulse" of world news:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2025/feb/04/benjamin-...

Trump said Palestinians have “no alternative” but to “permanently” leave Gaza due to the devastation left by Israel’s war on Hamas. He described Gaza as a “pure demolition site” and claimed Palestinians would “love to leave Gaza”. “I don’t know how they could want to stay,” he said.

Trump’s comments marked the first time he has publicly floated the permanent relocation of Palestinians from Gaza. The US president’s remarks in effect endorsed ethnic cleansing of the territory over the opposition of Palestinians and the neighbouring countries.

Trump is literally for completely ridding Gaza of the Palestinians so Israel can colonize it. An ACTUAL genocide.

Ayn Rand was pretty insistent that we should be able to objectively ascertain the facts. Objectivism failed precisely because we're not really all that rational, and because apart from the irrational part of us there's also the fact that we can manipulate perception and gaslight others. If you're a newcomer to a pair of groups that vehemently disagree as to the facts you might soon find that you have to make a choice yourself as to which group to join, and suddenly you have to deal with social pressures not just facts. Do you want to be in the in-group or in the out-group? Can you deal with the shaming that goes with being in the out-group? Etc.

It's all so tedious, but this is what we humans are like.

We study history in order to understand the present moment. So your question presents a false dilemma in an attempt to cut off historical analysis and blindly continue what you're doing without question. How is society actually shaped? If you believe it's by people simply "showing up," you are delusional.
freshpots · a year ago
I humbly disagree, at least at the local level. Get involved and you'll be surprised at how much you can do. Local clubs, like an Optimist Club or Lions Club volunteering for your community builds relationships. Many people involved are part of the community: business owners, politicians, accomplished/connected individuals, etc. Much of what affects you in a democracy is local and can be changed if you get involved. It is not just about checking some boxes every couple years.

Myself.

More specifically, my mental health. I'm a bit of a mess, and I'm not sure I'll be able to properly commit to any external endeavors until I'm feeling better inside.

Sometimes things click and sometimes they don't. Like when someone tells you not to worry about the things that you can't control. What worked for someone close to me was imagining and believing that everything will work out in the end. Over time they have seen the positive in life and opened more opportunities than when they were cynical.
