I have November off before I start a new job in December and am finally taking time to start a developer blog! It's always been a dream of mine. I started with a simple problem I've come across in a few codebases, automating soft deleting in Prisma ORM. Looking for critiques of form and content. I am inspired by the dev blogs I see posted on HN all the time.

It was more difficult than I expected to structure this simple article and I enjoyed the process. It forced me to read my sources and fact-check myself and even realize a few improvements I could make to the code as I was writing it.

I used to have to take the train to college and back home on breaks and it was nice trip.

You can't bring a whole dorm and your closet, but a backpack and a bag for clothes are manageable. I always brought some bags of beef jerky and would watch the scenic view or listen to an audiobook. Just sitting on the train, enjoying my snack and watching nature was a nice way to pass time time.

Same here, Capital Region NY to NYC. Such a nicer trip than city road traffic.

I didn't stick around the Capital Region too long after college but I actually found the Troy community to be incredibly engaging. Maybe it was a function of time and place, but I got into cycling groups, community arts orgs, and volunteerism. It helped that I made friends in college who were already plugged into the local community.

I do love Troy and it is indeed surprisingly lively. I think shifting from a “I’m here temporarily for school” to “I’m now an average local” has been difficult to navigate and kept me from thinking about those sorts of local communities. Your comment is a good reminder.

As a recent grad in upstate New York, this exact problem of college friendships atrophying has been on my mind nonstop. My girlfriend and I host monthly cocktail parties in an attempt to stem the tide and even make new friends, but I’ve definitely been looking for male-focused groups. I’m interested!

I don't own an Airtag or iPhone for that matter. I wonder how is it supposed to not raise a false alarm if you are travelling with someone who has an Airtag - e.g. by car or by train. Now imagine changing trains at the same stop with someone who has an Airtag with them (this is s typical situation in commute with public transit).

So I figure it takes a longer time for the devices to be close to each other to raise an alarm.

Now back to the mail thief, I suppose an hour or two is enough to catch them.

My partner had a scare when she got a false alarm that an AirTag was on her after going out with friends. Turns out it was due to driving with a friend that had one.

Outside of working hours I’m developing a podcast hosting platform called Soapbox[0]. I had started my own podcast with my college friends and rolled my own RSS feed and site with AstroJS[1]. Then realized I could offer the service to others. Thanks to modern web APIs I’m going to pursue an in-browser recording studio with WebRTC and then in-browser basic audio editing. I’m very excited because it’s my first side project I’m trying to turn into a business (I opened an LLC and everything). I’m gratified because it’s very different work than my day job in fintech. I’m also offering internships to my college’s CS students and mentoring through that as well which is very fulfilling (I’m a recent grad).
