fma commented on AI agents are starting to eat SaaS   martinalderson.com/posts/... · Posted by u/jnord

It's a bit surprising to me that Microsoft hasn't created a product that's "you have an Excel file in one of our cloud storage systems, here's a way for you to vibe code and host a web app whose storage is backed entirely by that file, where access control is synced to that file's access, and real-time updates propagate in both directions as if someone were editing it in native Excel on another computer. And you can eject a codebase that you, as the domain expert, can hand to a tech team to build something more broadly applicable for your organization."

Nowhere near the level of complexity that would enter your threat model. But this would be the first, minimal step towards customers building their own tools, and the fact that not even this workflow has entered the zeitgeist is... well, it's not the best news for some of the most bullish projections of AI adoption in businesses large and small.

Are you calling out Microsoft specifically or just in general any big tech company? Because Google can do this with Google sheets using Apps Script.

Or their online groceries didnt succeed because people can p4ice shop. I am of the belief Kroger does well because they obfuscate their prices and their tags which make it seems like they are sales truely are not.

Unlike Publix if I see a discount I know it is a discount. Every other item in Kroger has a yellow tag and a red price to make you think you are getting a deal when in fact the red number is higher than regular price at normal stores.

Four out of the five top executives of Palantir earned degrees from top 10 US universities.

The only person who doesn't have a degree listed is co-founder/CEO Alexander Karp. He has a BS, JD and a PhD.

Is there somewhere I can determine if a particular business is majority held by a PE firm?
fma · 3 months ago
I would really hope for this to be a thing. I have high suspicion of which ones are due to degradation of quality...but if I'm going to switch to another provide I'd like to know before hand if they are PE or not.

fma commented on How AI is upending the software development industry   reuters.com/lifestyle/boo... · Posted by u/wglb

> Coding bootcamps have been a mainstay in Silicon Valley for more than a decade. Now, as AI eliminates the kind of entry-level roles for which they trained people, they’re disappearing.

OK, so I think there is a fair chance it will play out like this: the younger generation won't study CS anymore / learn how to code. Instead, they'll all vibe code.

This will lead to a massive increase in demand for seniors to clean up the vibe code, which isn't working properly or needs maintenance.

This demand increase will be exacerbated by the fact that there will be no new seniors since no one learned how to code...

Fun times ahead.

There's going to be so much vibe coding to clean up, that I'm gonna have a fever and the only prescription is, more vibe coding! (throwback to SNL More Cowbells skit...)

On a serious note, can't wait to see what salaries I command as a senior dev in a few years...when junior dev pipeline dried up and other older seniors left the industry.

fma commented on $83B Wasted: Showing up at the airport 3 hours before your flight   viewfromthewing.com/83-bi... · Posted by u/speckx

Wait, people actually show up 3 hours before their flight?

I try to make it 1 hour before, and that's only because of bag drop off deadlines. I know plenty of light travellers that show up 15-30 minutes before departure, basically at gate close time.

(disclaimer: in the EU)

American airports are inefficient. Unless you're flying from a rural airport, expect long security lines. Even with TSA precheck it can take 30 minutes. I also recently found out it is not always open (only during core hours).

Also we don't have good mass transportation. If you're in EU, Asia you can take a train and be pretty certain you'll get there on time (barring a big event). In the US...a crash on the interstate can wreck your day. A sporting event can cause huge traffic jams on the main arterial road. So I to leave my house early enough for the 2/3 hour "before the flight" to pad for that.

My recent international flights were out of Mexico, London, Hong Kong and security lines are short. I was expecting some kind of secondary check point (Having said that I recall flying out of Toronto and it was like Disney world line)

Yes, they have a feature with their 'Pro' base station and Premium subscription, to store video locally on SD card, but still the only way to access the video is through the Ring app. IMO they are just choosing not to compete with the on-prem closed circuit systems, which represent a niche market compared to normies who want a notification when someone rings their video doorbell.

Yes I saw that...what's wild is if you pay more money to store locally on your own memory, you LOSE cloud storage. You don't get both.

I was looking at security systems. It seems, Ring makes it very difficult to have any sort of offline operations. Recording onto SD card is limited or impossible. After seeing this, I realize this is likely by design. You have to be connected so that the surveillance state can get access at some point, somehow.
