I can also imagine that you might need to change your definition of what an accomplishment is. I tend to think of it as something that has a measurable output, but difficult-to-measure progress towards an outcome is also something (despite what product managers might think)

The solution is to get rid of CAs entirely.
ferngodfather · 2 months ago
Yeah, I completely agree. I'm not sure what the solution is, but this ain't it.

Can you explain how shorter certificate lifetimes make LE more of a single point of failure? I can squint and see an argument for CA diversity; I struggle to see how reducing certificate lifetimes increases CA centralization.
ferngodfather · 2 months ago
Because when they eventually get their wet dream of 7-day renewals, everyone replies upon them once a week. LE being down for 48-hours could take out a big chunk of the Internet.

Certificates have historically been a "fire and forget" but constant re-issuance will make LE as important as DNS and web hosting.

While we will never be able to get folks to stop using AI to “help” them shape their replies, it’s super annoying to have folks think that by using AI that they’re doing others a favor. If I wanted to know what an AI thinks I’ll ask it. I’m here because I want to know what other people think.

At this point, I make value judgments when folks use AI for their writing, and will continue to do so.

Yeah like if I wanted to know what a particular AI says, I'd have asked it..

Hertzner does on the server the OP was referencing:

Most providers do for dedicated servers, or make you agree to a fixed term. I don't believe they do the same for VPS / Cloud servers.

What are some cheaper and better hosting providers that you can recommend?
ferngodfather · 5 months ago
Hetzner! They do ask for ID though.

Isn't that where we are going eventually? Certs only lasting a day?
ferngodfather · 8 months ago
They simultaneously want shorter certs but can't cope with the current load

This sounds like you're either forced to work with them, or they can just publish pretty much anything and claim plausible deniability about whether it's true or not?
ferngodfather · 9 months ago
I guess but what's the alternative? Either leave the info out or make maps paid to cover the cost of human reviewers.

I am a Local Guide and Google never prompts me to confirm anything.

Local Guides are ordinary unpaid Google accounts who submit reviews, photos, and other edits as I’ve detailed here. We are sometimes prompted to answer questions, but only with a blank to fill in.

https://support.google.com/maps/answer/7084895?hl=en

Google says "We review all the edits you make."

Go maps app > contribute > answer yes / no questions to help others

Random users can update business profile numbers and Google publishes them without asking the number's owner for permission? Seems like a huge oversight.
ferngodfather · 9 months ago
If the owner isn't registered with Google business, yes. Other users (local guides) are asked to confirm the change.

If they are registered, the request goes to the business owner to approve in my experience. We used to get lots of phantom requests telling us our opening hours had changed but if you're registered you can just decline them.
