Heads up: I clicked a tile and got the hamsterdance music pretty loud in my ears. Serves me right for being distracted during a meeting but still, sound warning :)

Yes, and I'm a little ashamed to admit my morning routine wasn't the same without it.

I suggest Cosmic Desktop (currently at alpha7) for anyone looking for a hyprland -kind of experience but with a bit more desktop feeling.

It's already quite stable even though it's an alpha version, possibly thanks to being implemented in Rust. I've been using it daily on my personal laptop since its release in April. No big problems, some missing features and tweakability though.

I second this. Cosmic has been rock solid for me even in Alpha.

It looks great and has some really nice built-in apps (like cosmic term that is built off of Alacritty)

Here's another example of a custom rust operator, https://github.com/mach-kernel/databricks-kube-operator

Written by a co-worker to help manage our databricks projects across clusters. Works wonderfully!!

fedreg commented on Ask HN: Best path to Emacs for lifelong vi guy?    · Posted by u/cylinder714

I am about a month further along than you on this journey. I started with vanilla Emacs and went through the built-in tutorial for a few days, then at the behest of friends switched to Doom.

Using Doom was valuable for me to see what Emacs can be. It is astonishing how much of an upgraded experience it is. However I felt I couldn’t understand where Emacs ended and Doom began, and the number of moving parts was making it hard to find solutions to problems.

For example, Doom keybindings for standard functions differ from normal Emacs bindings, so you can’t just follow any Stack Overflow post—the bindings won’t work. The fact that I didn’t even know why this was the case was getting to me.

I switched back to vanilla Emacs and, armed with the knowledge of what is possible, have been building up my config for a few weeks. I am making a special effort to avoid Evil Mode for a bit so I can learn all the bindings and make the decision for myself whether I like them or not. God Mode helps here as a more idiomatic alternative.

If your learning style is focused on knowing your foundation before building atop it, I’d recommend a similar path. I also have got a lot of value from sifting through others’ configs to pick up gems here and there. With literate programming it’s very common to find fantastically documented configs online.

Did almost the same...

spacemacs > custom config with evil, trying to create a slimmed down spacemacs > vanilla with god mode.

Generally use vanilla bindings most of the time (w/ God mode) but sometimes load up evil for the fun of it. Now, however, it's no big deal when I pop into a mode that doesn't play nice with evil bindings.. I just turn off evil and am good to go

> Have found them in my house several times and even been bitten by them. I guess I'm just lucky but I never had an overly bad reaction to their venom.

I think you may just be lucky, they may dry bite, or maybe there’s some folks with antibodies. I have a 2-month-old recluse bite wound on my leg, it’s currently an open wound about 1.5 inches across. Been through debridement, 3 courses of antibiotics, etc. Appointment at a wound clinic next week to see if there’s anything can be done.

I too have been bitten multiple times in the past with no serious effect, just a black spot that healed slowly and left a tiny acne-like scar.

!!!!

Sorry to hear about your leg!!

Me fear of them just increased dramatically. I thought I was immune but may just have been lucky, as you said.
