Yes 1.10 version will be first version for V3 spec. But not all features are implemented on runners such as Spark or Flink.

I thought 1.9.0 already had at least some of the v3 features, like the variant type and column lineages? https://iceberg.apache.org/releases/#190-release

Of course I haven't seen any implementations supporting these yet.

This reflects a lot of what I've been through as well. My subscriptions exploded when AU got a lot of different streaming platforms, and I think when paramount+ came out and took Star Trek off of another one I drew the line. I realised I still owned all the physical media, so time to make backups. Previous to that I moved off Gmail, that was by far the hardest, and still somewhat ongoing after 8+ years.

The hardest to kick for me now is YouTube Premium.. And in AU it's like $33/month AUD, but I just can't stand ads.

Now I self host:

- Own Mastodon instance - Photos (Synology) - Videos (Synology) - Audio (Synology) - Storage (Minio) - Code/Build (Forejo) - Security (Synology)

My NAS is blocked from the internet, while web facing stuff is on a separate server (old dell workstation). And now have added a PI hole to another older dell box. My partner's laptop will be moving to Linux and will also be a Windows free household. I used Windows since 3.1, I liked it up until around Windows 7. I'm glad I've moved to Linux, but disappointed to see what has happened to Windows in general.

I want to self host more services for family, but the experience isn't there yet without quite a lot of work.

The tags #homelab and #selfhost are pretty decent to follow on Mastodon btw!

What about backups? My greatest fear is self-hosting valuable stuff (like family photos) only for my NAS to fail one day and lose potentially everything.

How does banning an individual from printing books restrict free speech? Do you think free speech didn't exist before the printing press?
fabatka · a year ago
I guess if it's only specific individuals/groups that can't print books, it's restricting free speech, if nobody can, it's not.

First thing I thought of too. Anyone know if there a list of more articles similar to these three?

I remember one (might have been a hn-er's comment, dunno) about the computer restarting when the toilet was flushed. Turns out it was due to voltage drop when a compressor turned on to refill the reservoir of the toilet.

Not sure why the study period matters as long as their sample is representative of the population, which it seems to be?

Because the results also depend on the economy. Different times might provide more wealth to people in different strata.

So the study says it increases activity. But it also says: “Effects for other physiological (blood pressure, cholesterol, and glycosylated haemoglobin) and psychosocial (quality of life and pain) outcomes were typically small and often non-significant.” so what’s the point of the extra activity?

My thoughts exactly. Goodhart's law and "cargo cult fitness" come to my mind.

Easy for Bill Gates to advocate for this, as he already got rich partly by people automating away lots of jobs using his operating systems and softwares.
