How many orders of magnitude more complicated is a human mind than a cell? Infinity, I'd guess.

Everybody forgets about tardigrades, but they will be here when we are long passed from all memory.

The profit motive at work.
ehvatum · a year ago
The profit motive reliably exposes brokenness. What changed to make loans for useless activity profitable? Normally, a loan for useless activity wouldn’t be issued, because of the expectation that it wouldn’t be repaid.

Welcome to modern capitalism though where that isn't even a secondary concern.

How can I get hired to do bioinformatics with pipes all day? Sounds like a dream. I have VR and control systems experience.

Sorry, I value my legal rights over the viability of the data broker industry. If they can’t figure out a way for lawfully not collecting my data, they should not collect data period.

Frankly, the fact anyone posting here knows about Burning Man proves it's over.

These things only work if they're special, such that only like-minded people know about them and can attend. It's the Summer Of Love Problem: Once everyone's calling it that, the idiots, losers, and assholes move in, and nobody can experience what it once was. It's why MIT and Harvard will never be "inclusive" in any real way, just differently exclusive along other arbitrary contours.

I feel the same way about the Barkley Marathons. What was once a soulful, austere and obscure contest against time and nature is now become a Roman orgy of decadence with contestants hauled about on opulent palanquins and all manner of one-wheeled contraption. It used to be special. If drugs were taken, they were not enjoyed. Hacker News became aware of the marathons, and now it’s only a matter of time until old Lazarus Lake is blowing that conch shell on stage with Taylor Swift, I tell you.

ehvatum commented on How the electricity markets respond to a nuclear trip   blog.gridstatus.io/ercot-... · Posted by u/kmax12
ViewTrick1002 · a year ago
Given how the rightwing conservative politics have shifted from pure climate change denial to harping nuclear as the non-solution to prolong our reliance on fossil fuels the link is clear.
ehvatum · a year ago
Nuclear power derives its energy from the binding energy of ultra-heavy atomic nuclei, not fossil fuels. This energy can then be used to power electric cars, avoiding fossil fuel consumption. Furthermore, unlike wind and solar energy, nuclear power generation is not tied to the vagaries of weather, meaning that it doesn’t require burning millions of cubic meters of natural gas every overcast, calm day. For this reason, Russia historically was the largest single benefactor of Germany’s green euphoria: it prolongs fossil fuel reliance.

So often, emotional thinking leads to conclusions that are opposed to reality. You really have to watch out for it, if you want good results.

Good news, instead of spending $45K/year of your hard earned tax money to keep Homeless Joe in jail, we're going to spend $10K of your hard earned tax money to keep him housed.

You’re not going to be any happier with the circumstances of people living in enormous urban housing projects.

You should want a society where we are all rewarded for looking after each other, in the ways we are each best at. Nothing else can work.
