pro tip: do not try this on a microwave you want to keep. if you are successful you will likely cause a fire in your microwave. (it is fun, though).

Dillon here (CEO @ Paperspace, YCW15). I want to give a huge thanks to the YC community and all the support over the years. We have always admired DO and couldn't be happier to join forces!

Believe it or not, my journey to Y Combinator started similar to how you may experience YC — through being a regular lurker and reader on Hacker News.

I went to Startup School, me and my cofounders applied, we got an interview, and we got in. I was an engineer, designer and PM. I'd built teams and products, but I'd never built a company.

YC gave me a shot, a community, knowhow, and the ability to access capital, talent, and customers.

YC changed my life. I want it to help a lot more people achieve their dreams and goals. It did for me, beyond my wildest dreams.

I'm not knocking Paul Graham or anyone who did well for themselves. But comparing your experience with that of Paul Graham, one of the richest people on the planet, is pointless. The wealthy live on a completely different PLANET than you or me.

Of course he enjoys having kids, he has NONE of the stress of supporting himself and his family.

His kids are going to have private tutors and house cleaners.

He won't sweat the cost of daycare. He will never have to worry about paying for college.

He is going to have a nanny whenever he needs someone to watch the kids.

He will never have to worry about making rent for the rest of his life.

He will still be able to pursue whatever he dreams of with basically 0 risk.

As a counterpoint, this essay resonated with me very deeply, and I earn a low salary for an engineer in NYC.

We do fine as a family and have to make compromises I couldn’t have imagined making prior to having kids, but it’s totally worth it.

This type of experience isn’t universal but doesn’t require massive wealth.

I am surprised that higher capacity storage on phones was not mentioned as a driver of podcast listenership. For me, when I upgraded to a phone that had 32GB of storage around 2014 I was finally able to store mp3s that would download automatically ready for me to listen to along with all the music and photos that we would otherwise fill up our phone storage with. Before this, it was actually pretty hard to be an avid listener of lots of podcasts without having to deal with the hassle of managing your data storage.

This is a _really_ good point! I'm trying to find some data on this right now... might have to dig through e.g. Apple's previous phone releases to see trends over time.
