dustinmr commented on I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a supply-chain risk   twitter.com/secwar/status... · Posted by u/jacobedawson

The disconnect here for me is, I assume the DoW and Anthropic signed a contract at some point and that contract most likely stipulated that these are the things they can do and these are the things they can't do.

I would assume the original terms the DoW is now railing against were in those original contracts that they signed. In that case it looks like the DoW is acting in bad faith here, they signed the original contact and agreed to those terms, then they went back and said no, you need to remove those safeguards to which Anthropic is (rightly so) saying no.

Am I missing something here?

EDIT: Re-reading Dario's post[1] from this morning I'm not missing anything. Those use cases were never part of the original contacts:

> Two such use cases have never been included in our contracts with the Department of War

So yeah this seems pretty cut and dry. Dow signed a contract with Anthropic and agreed to those terms. Then they decided to go back and renege on those original terms to which Anthropic said no. Then they promptly threw a temper tantrum on social media and designated them as a supply chain risk as retaliation.

My final opinion on this is Dario and Anthropic is in the right and the DoW is acting in bad faith by trying to alter the terms of their original contracts. And this doesn't even take into consideration the moral and ethical implications.

> To be honest the Roomba sucked

I have an old Roomba (980 perhaps?) and laud it as one of my best appliances. It’s a work horse!

We’re had it for five-six years and it still works great. Nowadays it sometimes needs to charge twice to finish, but I only notice if I’m home - and I could just replace the battery. Parts are so easy to replace, that my wife has replaced most, and she isn’t a tinkerer.

Maybe I just don’t know what I’m missing - I’ve never had others - but I love my Roomba.

I have one I bought in 2008. My parents still use it. Replace batteries and filters. Works fine.

Gets stuck on cords and in corners. So does the one I bought in September 2025.

The fibrous Trackpoint is still my absolute favourite.

For folks who want more in-depth backstory, going all the way back to the beginning and the origin of the "ThinkPad" name see:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/483933.ThinkPad

I really wish that there would be a true heir to the mantle, and a return to some of the original ideas, esp. the early stylus models and variants such as the TransNote --- if Lenovo would do a version of their Yogabook 9i under the ThinkPad brand and use a Wacom EMR stylus and put a Trackpoint on the keyboard it'd be an instabuy for me --- as it is, I use a Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360 and only get a Trackpoint when using my docking setup w/

(need to find time to buy an updated one (and a spare) w/ USB-C)

I have a few of the THINK notepads that I found in my grandfather’s things after he passed away. He was an IBM employee in the 50s and 60s.

I remember picking the first one up and saying out loud, “that’s where the name came from!”

dustinmr commented on What if we made advertising illegal?   simone.org/advertising/... · Posted by u/smnrg

Sao Paulo, Brazil, made outdoor advertising illegal. That worked out quite well.

The US used to forbid prescription drug advertising. That seemed to work.

Ads for liquor, marijuana, and gambling are prohibited in many jurisdictions.

The FCC once limited the number of minutes of ads per hour on the public airwaves. That limit was below 10% of air time in the 1960s.

The SEC used to limit ads for financial products to dull "tombstone" ads, which appeared mostly in the Wall Street Journal.

A useful restriction might be to make advertising non tax deductible as a business expense. That encourages putting value into cost of goods sold rather than marketing.

The author is identifying a technical problem (it’s become so cheap/easy to insert ads they’re everywhere). Technical answers? How about require that it be easy to opt out, or simply remove the ads from the content. Codify ad-blocking software.

Not going to happen, but I wonder how a mixed party ticket would do. Kamala (or whoever) + Mitt Romney as VP ?

Has it ever been done?

Would it work to attract the center/swing vote, or more likely to be a negative?

Digital Ocean is always a good bet for an affordable yet reliable server.

Or Netlify or Cloudflare Pages for static content. Both offer server less functions for a fee as well.

And I like to give them kudos when I see Digital Ocean mentioned. I run a business in Puerto Rico, and host our ERP and some other services with DO.

After Hurricane Maria in 2017, I wrote off island suppliers asking for any support they could give. DO write back very quickly crediting us 3 months of hosting based on our prior billing.

And besides, the rep sent a very nicely written note wishing us the best. It was a very human response. Good people to do business with.

What are you talking about exactly?

iOS GMail App > Settings > Default Apps

You cannot choose Firefox or Brave but you certainly can choose Safari.

I believe the complaint is that I have to renew that decision regularly.

Fair point. Typically I'm on the side of the free market and less government regulation, but this system breaks down if consumers have no choice but to use a small set of companies, who all have an interest in doing the same thing, and creating a new competitor is difficult.

Also known as not a free market.

I've tried tiling WMs a few times, maybe 4 years ago last and liked them (inclduing i3) but at least at the time there were too many problems.

If everything works now, Id be willing to try i3 when I install ubuntu 20.04.

Is it now easy to set up a launcher/start bar with a nice battery/volume/wifi etc. indicator? That work both when I click on them and via keys and with the icons visibly changing based on the current state?

Do all Windows open normally? Do they all fullscreen normally? Which don't?

Do you get any crashes?

Are there any WM-specific settings/fixes you have to tweak more often than once every 6 months?

https://regolith-linux.org/ solves much of what you’re asking.

If windows don’t behave, I put them in floating mode with Super-f or Super-shift-f to toggle. As you say, full screen when they shouldn’t be, or vice versa. In practice, the only app I have issues with is Zoom.

The i3bar implementation, includes battery charge, network info, etc. a click takes you to gnome-settings, where you can make changes. One of the few changes I make to i3.conf is to move the bar to the top. Personal preference.

If you tried it and liked tiling before, regolith is worth a shot. It’s pretty well done.

Maybe try changing the paradigm completely with a tiling window manager.

Take a look at https://regolith-linux.org/

I tried i3wm, a tiling window manager a few years ago, and it just sort of clicked with me. Eventually I set up a laptop with it, and decided I like it better than Mac. Around that time, Regolith was announced, and I found it to be a great looking, and great set of defaults and starting point. Gnome is still available if you get lost or break something.

Incidentally, I eventually arrived to using PopOS, and then installing regolith from the package manager. Working well so far.
