Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. "Ooh, la" sounds really unnatural.

But on a serious note, what did "la" mean in your context? I've never seen this.

durkie · 12 days ago
It’s a common thing for speakers of Singaporean English to end sentences with la/leh. But no idea if that’s what’s going on here.

My health insurance for a family of four in Spain is $2k/year. In the US, it was exceeding $25k/year with premiums, copays, deductibles, etc. While not free, it is accessible.

There was a time in my life we had to decide in the middle of the night if we could afford to take one of our children to the ER in the US when they were a newborn. I will never have that feeling in Europe, and that is priceless. Tax me more, I will happily contribute to a functioning governance system. I like taxes, with them I contribute to civilization. As an American, I am all in on Europe. It's not perfect, but the bar is in hell.

yo, these are businesses. It's not performative, its CYA.

They care because of legal reasons, not moral or ethical.

durkie · 7 months ago
Seriously. I feel like “performative” gets applied to anything imperfect. They’ll never stop 100% of murders, so these laws against it are just performative…

My brain is so rotted from the news that I can’t read this and not think it’s some sort of bee racism. Is this related to averting nationwide colony collapse? Seems like government overreach to my uninformed self.
durkie · 8 months ago
There are bee diseases that are so serious (American foulbrood) that if your hive gets it then the dept of agriculture will come out and not leave until you burn the affected hives. It is super infectious and can cause massive commercial damage if allowed to spread.

Wow this is my first time hearing about the Geodesk format. It seems super useful...I do a ton of OSM data processing, and I can't really do anything with it until it's loaded in to PostGIS, so this would save a ton of time/storage space over that.

From the way you described it, it sounds like there were openings and Biden appointed folks to fill those openings.

How is this different from any president filling any vacancy? By nature of the vacancy being filled, a future president won’t be able to fill it.

I’m sure the algorithm can play a huge role in the effectiveness of learning but for me the difficult part was always creating the cards and actually opening the app to practice.

I've built Komihåg [1] to try and combat this: Select any text on your iOS device and a flashcard is automatically created for you, and the app is then showing you the cards on the Home Screen / Lock Screen / Apple Watch Face.

I haven't gotten to implement any sophisticated scheduling algorithm yet but will definitely do that eventually.

I was looking to use this with the iOS Books app, but I can’t share text to your app from there (but something like safari works). Any idea why?

When it comes to "Ruby-like and statically typed", Crystal is such an amazing language. I think the design is incredible, but every time I try to use it, I just hit so many issues and things that slow me down. I think it's such a cool language, but every time I try to use it I just end up switching back to Ruby.
durkie · 9 months ago
Same! I reach for crystal when I need something that is going to perform faster than ruby, but man I get my hand slapped constantly when writing it.

And why does it have so many bankers?
durkie · 9 months ago
This is mentioned in the John McPhee book referenced elsewhere in the thread, because there is actually an answer: when the cantons stopped fighting and Switzerland/Helvetica Confederation was formed, the Swiss finance/banking system developed to handle all the money being brought in by those folks acting as mercenaries and being paid to fight other people’s wars.

another option that would have been interesting to see here is serving PostGIS GeoJSON export -> tippecanoe encode. Tippecanoe is super fast, parallelizes well and built solely for generating vector tile data (with lots of configurable options that PostGIS lacks)
