This is a very naive take. For one, we don't do this because a lot of people in a lot of places have no other choice. Not everyone lives in a developed European country, good luck living without a car in Texas.

I am not arguing against cars. I am just arguing against the "right" to pollute the environment without taking responsibility for adequate cleanup.

Why do we still allow drivers to externalize most of the costs associated with cars? There is existing technology to extract co2 from the atmosphere, and the current cost of this should be the free market-based price for co2 emissions.

Here's to hoping that Andy Byford can make through running happen at NY Penn.

One "trick" that helped me some times: If you don't make progress with a task, count breaking it down into subtasks as an accomplishment

I had grand plans to build something like this when my kids were small, but ended up building this https://github.com/dmd/nkplay/ instead.

It's just a rpi plugged into a standalone numeric keypad, acting as a jukebox. Playlists are numbered.

By the time my kids were about three, they could enter the numbers on their own, and by four they had memorized the playlists so well they didn't look at the printed catalog any more.

I wonder if one of the Anberinc (or similar) devices with single-purpose software would be an option for people shy of going into hardware...

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a railroad train full of memory sticks...
dukoid · a year ago
I suppose the bandwidth is not the bottleneck currently but mainly the "switching capacity" for this kind of application?

dropping packets would be a much bigger deal...

Yeah I was going to write UDP first but then thought it might be a worse analogy because of that.

So what I was trying to say is: Why can't shipping containers be more "automatically" routed over rail? Perhaps fully automatic rail car couplers would be more helpful in general than yet another gadgetbahn?
