Interestingly the original Napster was a pretty good social network! I really liked being able to browse through all of a user's shared files. We should bring something like that back.

a very opinionated piece that leads by conclusion rather than building up to it.

The main part of ATProto that is centralized is the PLC and that will eventually be made (most likely) into a consortium. PDS hosting is debatable

That being said, it should be possible to run completely independent atproto networks today. We have several dev infra setups for doing it in the ecosystem

But does anyone do it? It doesn't really matter if it's /theoretically possible/ if no one actually does it.

Running an ActivityPub server is piss easy, anyone can do it on a $5 VPS or in their basement, and that's one of its big strengths.

They also don't always do that. Look at the super popular BOOX e-ink notebooks. 100% in violation of the GPL, and has been for years, yet available to buy in common retailers such as Best Buy.

These are edging out popular devices, such as reMarkable, which are GPL compliant.

Uh huh. Why don't you draft me up a license that magically keeps people from violating its rules, then.

Because before your know it your very much open source company called Prusa will end up being competed with by subsidized stuff from the east based on your own work.

I don't belive in "open source", I believe in free software.

So what? They make something better, so I take what they did and improve my product.

It's not my problem if someone from the Big Red East does something with my work as long as they share it too.

The words "good" and "very bad" indicate that the world is less important to that person than themselves. I'd be okay with a bit of personal harm if it helps against climate change.

Ultra-processed food does not have an agreed-upon definition, and is the new "junk food" with the pretense of being more scientific. Is bread and pizza ultra-processed food? Studies do not agree on their definitions, sometimes including ingredient lists, sometimes not, sometimes it is required that the product is made in small shops with love and not in large factories. The mechanism of how ultra-processed food are supposed to cause harm remains undefined.

Yeah, no shit? We're not ants in a colony. I think you're pretty stupid if you're alright with harming yourself while achieving nothing. If you wanna risk your life for a cause then take direct action, eating processed slop and pretending to feel good about it is only gonna make both your world and mine shittier.

> I'm sick of open source purism.

> Open source purism - especially for non-viral MIT and BSD licenses - is how Google and Microsoft and Amazon stole from the commons and turned it against us.

So why don't you advocate for Free Software which has always worked in the interest of the commons and provided the GPL as a way to combat this, instead of something else that isn't free and restricts the freedom of users more than a weak license?

Your parents medication costs more than a car payment because developing medication is expensive. Developing medication is expensive partly because it's just innately expensive, but mostly because going through the bureaucracy of getting it approved is really expensive. You want cheaper medicine? Then make that faster and cheaper. But there are tradeoffs.

Got what they asked for.
