The reason simply is late stage capitalism, there's not enough upside anymore, so why bother do a good job? That's how I explain it. I noticed that as well with almost all employees, there was a shift. And it feels like it's got to do with misaligned incentives. Why bother working yourself stupid if you'll never own a house if you don't become a slave to the loan? There's no upwards movement/middle class anymore.

This, very much.

My employer has no bonus system whatsoever for regular employees so even if I did put in extra effort and the company made more profits, all of that would go into management's pockets.

And as you said, even if I miraculously made 20% more, I still wouldn't be able to afford a house.

So why bother? Of all the things I can do with my energy, making management richer is very much not a priority.

It's so random who this hits. I've had very little problems. YMMW. If you really want to run your own mail server and can stand to try, just try it. It may work with your IP. (Or whatever heuristic which the main providers go by.)

In my case, sending to Gmail works via IPv4 but they reject anything I send via IPv6. That was fun to figure out.

Personally I use https://github.com/jpillora/chisel as a reverse Proxy through nginx, then connect through it using OpenVPN to bypass a similarly restrictive firewall. But this discussion is filled with other, similar hacks, I may have to try some of them.

There are no real alternatives. I'm installing apps on a factory reset Samsung A40 from 2019. The last ones of all the process are banking apps, github (only because they decided I need 2FA (*)) and a digital identity one for my country, basically another 2FA. I really don't have an alternative for them. In theory I could leave an Android phone in a drawer at home for those apps, use WhatsApp web on the Pine, maybe Telegram desktop, maybe Gnome maps or Google Maps web, but I'm not paying for two devices.

And the PinePhone Pro is a brick: 160.8mm x 76.6mm x 11.1mm and 215 grams. I'm looking at the 11.1 mm and the 215 grams. Granted, 200 grams is becoming worryingly normal for the new flagships but it's still a brick and those flagships are bricks too. I'm not buying something like that. If they want me to go around with 200 grams in my pocket they pay me. The A40 is 140 grams. I'm afraid there won't be alternatives for that in a few years too, and I don't buy stuff from Apple or one of the old SEs would be a solution until they will also grow big and fat.

(*) I'm also not logging in into GitHub since they forced me on 2FA, because of the extra pass. I currently don't need it for my job and I don't have to open issues to open source projects. The first time I'll have to I'll count to ten and see what to do.

FYI, you can use oathtool on your PC for 2FA, you don't need custom apps for that.

So.. how does everyone feel about their stuff on GitHub right now?

Yes, this is already the case on Android. Two years ago I canceled smart-id contract (https://www.smart-id.com/) and stopped using any "smart" devices. Because one day the smart-id app ceased to work on my rooted smartphone.

Soon my old 3G dumbphone will be useless as the mobile operator ends the service. People are pushed to newer phones^W surveillance devices and I have to hunt for real 2G phone soon.

doctor_lollipop · 4 years ago
My operator terminated its 2G network last year, forcing me to upgrade to a 3G phone. Let's hope your operator won't do the same thing.

There are ath9k wifi cards with open source firmware https://github.com/qca/open-ath9k-htc-firmware

> There are ath9k wifi cards with open source firmware

I use these almost exclusively for laptops and routers, I keep ripping Intel wifi cards out of laptops and replacing them with ath9k cards.

Ever since I started doing so things "just work" - no more random disconnects, lockups, need-to-reboot-to-get-wifi-working-again etc.

Technology can be so nice if it's open.

Wouldn't that be more the publisher's fault?
doctor_lollipop · 4 years ago
Hard to tell. It's Steam that refuses the refund, no idea how the decision is made. Apparently others managed to eventually get the refund by trying again and again; maybe I gave up too soon.

No. Valve has offered refunds in all countries since mid-2015. The Australian suit was filed in 2014.

The usual refund conditions are “less than two hours of play, within two weeks of purchase.”

doctor_lollipop · 4 years ago
I'm still upset with them: A couple of years ago, Linux support for Rust (the game) was discontinued and the publisher said that all Linux users would get a refund on Steam, regardless of play time. I tried several times but all my attempts at getting a refund were rejected.

Not much you can do - if the machines decide you don't get a refund, well, then you don't. I haven't bought anything on Steam since.

If you take the deductable tax rate per kilometer, which is 70 Rappen[0], and assume 15000 kilometers a year you get 10'500 Francs per year

If you Google the question you find a variety of answers, but I think looking at it from the tax man's perspective is a good start.

I agree that the cost nay vary, but it can also be significantly higher than 1K per month, depending on the model of car, yearly kilometers and your risk from an insurance perspective.

[0] That's the rate you can deduct from your taxable income per kilometer if you use a private car for work purposes.

doctor_lollipop · 4 years ago
Thanks, that clarifies things. The number makes sense as a rough average (which would make sense for the taxes), calling it a 'minimum' was what confused me a little.
