But we need another one to detect whether yours is still up.

It's downdetectorsdown all the way down.

We could create a linked list of these and just refer to the N’th one as N-down detector.

Fascinating. I would totally watch a TV series on this.

> If you can make $30 an hour as a digital freelance marketer (a job that did not exist a generation ago), then you won’t accept less than that from working in food service. And if you can make $150 an hour installing HVAC for data centers, you’re not going to accept less from doing home AC service.

Plenty of people work jobs for less money because they enjoy the work more. I’m not sure if it’s worth reading what follows if most of the argument is predicated on this claim.

It would be a cool feature of AI to include only the subset of the library you use and nothing else.

It depends. For stuff I don’t care about I’m happy to treat it as a black box. Conversely, AI now allows me to do deep dive on essentially anything I’m interested in, which has been a massive boon to my learning ability.

I see lots of comments focusing on cases where there is necessary research still to do.

Which I think misses the point - which is there are times when you’ve already done enough research, but you’re afraid to act so you procrastinate. i.e. not doing the thing.

Awk is still one of my favorite tools because its power is underestimated by nearly everyone I see using it.

    ls -l | awk '{print $3}'
That’s typical usage of Awk, where you use it in place of cut because you can’t be bothered to remember the right flags for cut.

But… Awk, by itself, can often replace entire pipelines. Reduce your pipeline to a single Awk invocation! The only drawback is that very few people know Awk well enough to do this, and this means that if you write non-trivial Awk code, nobody on your team will be able to read it.

Every once in a while, I write some tool in Awk or figure out how to rewrite some pipeline as Awk. It’s an enrichment activity for me, like those toys they put in animal habitats at the zoo.

This sounds interesting. Could you give an example where you rewrote a pipeline in awk?

One of my best memories was in undergrad there was one semester in 2013 where half a dozen of my CS classmates and I competed to try and solve the most Project Euler problems. We had a leaderboard and everything.

I saw first hand how much faster my friend’s Java solutions were than my Python solutions.

Good times.

Not an original idea, but I’m working on writing a minimal OS to run Doom.

The author doesn’t explain the jump from finding community online to committing crimes/hacking.

Or did I miss it..?
