> Capitalism cannot unlock the potential of the web

Luckily you can just log in to the communist internet, invented before the capitalist one and with way better content and potential. Right?

Because world is binary and the only two choices are capitalism and communism, right?

When I talk to my Google Home then 50% of my brain power is engaged in predicting and working out how to best phrase something so that the "AI" understands what I mean and the other 50% is used to actually think about what I want to accomplish in the first place. This is just about okay for things like switching lights on/off or requesting a nice song I want to listen to, but I could never be productive programming like this. When I'm in the zone I don't want to have to waste any mental capacity on supplementing an imperfect AI, I want to be thinking 100% about what I want to code and just let my fingers do the work.

For that reason I think this will be less appealing to developers than GitHub may think, otherwise I think it's a cool idea.

I think this is great for: a) people who are visually impaired or have issues with their hands/fingers b) people who aren't programmers; if you could make it more Scratch-like then this is amazing tool for showing off power of programming

It's never going to be over. All the easy interesting problems were solved years ago. Now you have to work really hard to come up with something technology related that hasn't been done before.
dkns commented on Ask HN: Do you pull and run code as part of code review?    · Posted by u/gary_chambers
nicoburns · 4 years ago
I wish there was a better workflow for this. We have code across ~10 repos at work, and I'm usually working on something else. So checking out somebody's code for pull requests is pretty disruptive. We generally consider "that the code runs" not to be part of code review, and have a separate testing phase before codes goes into production. Which works, but it definitely could be a smoother process.

Have you tried using git worktree?

Kindle - had one or another model for many years, but in terms of utility to price ratio, it's still one of the highest.

Youtube Premium - I realized I was spending a ton of time on Youtube, both for education, entertainment and podcasts. Removing the annoyance of ads and not being able to just listen to a video while out walking is worth it to me.

I agree 101% on Kindle. Bought mine (Oasis 2) 3 years ago and since then the amount of books I read skyrocketed. Absolutely worth every penny.

I am also surprised by this. What are you basing it on? For arbitrarily comparable online communities, it looks like emacs.stackexchange.com is twice as active as vi.stackexchange.com

Stack Overflow survey (https://insights.stackoverflow.com/survey/2019#development-e...) has Vim at ~25% while Emacs is at 4.5%.

Also, all public sector employees who do not perform critical functions will be sent home on paid leave, and all private companies are recommended to do the same.

On top of this all public gatherings of more than 100 people is discouraged, and it is alsp encouraged for all bars and nightclubs to keep closed for now. These are expected to be signed into law within the week.

dkns commented on Ask HN: Do you ever truly use your revision history?    · Posted by u/_bxg1

I agree code history can be used as a form of documentation, but in cases like this looking through years of code to find the decisions/reasons leading to a particular design seems like inefficient communication. It seems like "real" documentation with a few sentences explaining directly would be more suitable.

You might find some weird hack in codebase that isn't obvious what it does at the first glance. This isn't something that people document in official documentation but even finding a JIRA ticket that is linked with that specific commit can help tremendously.

I totally quit television about a year ago, and it had a very noticeable positive impact on me. I also mostly quit Facebook with the end of last year. I say mostly, because I still use its event calendar, and occasionally check my stream. But I significantly reduced the amount of comments I leave on that platform.

I feel like, while the criticism of FaceBook, Twitter, Reddit and co is pretty much warranted, we managed to push aside the biggest time sink we already have since the 60s. TV, and Netflix, for that matter, is wasting our time since many many years.

There is a great plugin for browsers called 'news feed eradicator'. It's great because it turns facebook into messenger with notification center when somebody mentions you or there is event coming up.
