dh5 commented on AI Saved My Company from a 2-Year Litigation Nightmare   tylertringas.com/ai-legal... · Posted by u/anitil

Thank God I've never been involved in serious litigation, but his description of the process sounds absolutely wild to me. Reminder that the US is a global outlier in 'loser doesn't pay winners' attorneys' fees' (as he notes, this is literally called the American Rule). And a global outlier in using juries for civil trials, which can lead to some gigantic unpredictable judgements. I'd imagine our discovery laws are unique too.

Surprised some business-friendly US state hasn't greatly restricted discovery in civil litigation, so as to attract companies to incorporate there. And this is why arbitration rose as a way to settle disputes- if you look at the standard arbitration agreement they greatly limit discovery

It cuts the other way as well. It's incredibly easy to file suit against larger corporations (e.g. your landlord in small claims) and just represent yourself and be confident all you're potentially out is the court filing fee. I've personally done it twice and settled before it went to trial; without the American rule there would be no way I could risk having them take it to trial and pay their fees.

I don't want to be mean or assert without evidence, but, I'm not really sure how to respond: #2 simply doesn't happen, or even close, and it's also not a common partisan interpretation I'm being smug about. It's just flat out wrong, both parties don't try to ram a bill through, the government actually does shut down, and there's no calendar association.

I believe there actually often is a calendar association but only because the US fiscal year starts October 1st, and funding legislation needs to be enacted before then.

i did not read the study. an obvious confounding factor is that doctors with better board scores are hired into better hospitals with better patient populations, and thus better outcomes.
dh5 · a year ago
This was controlled for as stated in the article:

> The researchers compared outcomes for patients within the same hospitals who were cared for by doctors with different exam scores. This allowed the researchers to eliminate, or at least minimize, the effect of differences in patient populations, hospital resources, and other variations that might influence the odds of patient death or readmission, independent of a doctor’s performance.

I could never achieve this. Even after months of consistent training, my heart rate tends to shoot up pretty fast and max out even for small effort runs. Cardiologist tests haven't turned up anything and they insist I can continue to do what I'm doing (some even saying I shouldn't be afraid to go beyond max HR, but I don't know about that). If anyone else experiences the same or has some insight into this, do share.

EDIT: what my training looks like: zone 2 training with a chest strap monitor. 30-45 min sessions, barely breaking out of walking speed, 2-3 days a week for months altogether, mixing it up with interval runs some times. I've done this many times over in my life, never seeing any improvement. Even today, the smallest of jogs will take me to max HR within 10-15 min

dh5 · a year ago
If you are running less than 30 miles per week or so and don't have multiple injury risk factors (e.g. prior history of injury, being older, female) you can fairly safely run at whatever pace you'd like and know that running more and running faster will help you become faster.

The idea of "zone 2 training" that is peddled sometimes on social media makes no sense if you're not running consistent mileage and actively looking to run faster. At that point, the idea is that you're minimizing injury risk in between 2+ hard efforts per week, while still getting in the miles.

I think it will be a temporary phenomenon. Tiktok people arrived on RedNote last week and were jaw-droppingly amazed at videos of flashy modern Chinese cities, natural wonders (Guilin mountains), beautifully dressed young men and women, tasty food, Luigi fandom, and cute cats.

For many it was a revelation that the US government/media complex has been systematically lying to them about China. They are arriving at an acceptance that the US is a shabby declining empire dominated by a corrupt elite and heartless broligarchs. Always a good thing to bump up against reality, imho.

However I think that the US-based population of Tiktok refugees will subside once the novelty effect has worn off. Probably shrink by half in a month. Hopefully there will remain a positive lingering effect.

I thought conservatives were against safe spaces?

I'm guessing this definition of a safe space (e.g. able to say what you want, with possible racism included) isn't what nonconservatives would label a safe space.

Ding is clearly a better player who can play at high level with little preparation. Gukesh have the whole Indian team behind him hardly put any pressure on Ding. Sometimes not the best player wins. And I am disappointed that Gukesh played as an average GM when he is out of his prep. There is definitely something lacking.
dh5 · a year ago
No one at this level is playing tournaments without massive preparation. This is especially true at the WCC where both sides have not just one but teams of seconds to help with prep.

Ding has been a shadow of himself ever since he won the world championship and if anything has been seen as the weakest world champion since 2006.

dh5 commented on Is running a more efficient way to travel than walking?   joehxblog.com/is-running-... · Posted by u/freediver

Same here! Have you found a solution? I was pretty happy with 3 miles 3-4 times per week, 10 to 11 minute pace, but apparently for me that's pushing too hard according to zone training. I tried going much slower, and even then my HR raises more slowly, but eventually gets way up there. Alternating my slowest possible jog and walking has taken all the fun out of running for the time being.
dh5 · 2 years ago
"Zone" training is primarily a way for high mileage runners to get the physical adaptation of running with lower risk of injury on easy days. If you're running < 20 mpw there should be minimal risk of injury and you should focus on increasing mileage and not on heart rate (which is highly variable depending on the person anyway, and should be properly determined with a LT test).

Kinda misunderstands algebraic notation: You are by no means required to use the minimal unambiguous notation. In fact, the canonical form is something like "Ng1-f3". "Nf3" is a context-dependent abbreviation of that.

Dig up an old chess book if you don't believe me. You'll find books that only use the long form.

dh5 · 2 years ago
Notation has changed over the years. Even twenty years ago you could pick up (admittedly dated) books using descriptive notation (e.g. P-K4). It's pretty clear what is the accepted standard for notation today though.
