Yes it seems quite clever. People who upvote zero effort memes willy nilly will spread their share thin.
devdas · 2 years ago
There are a lot more people who upvote zero effort memes though.

I would also say that ADHD meds are much more susceptible to this, because the psychological effect is just so noticeable. Taking Vyvanse by itself compared with taking it with a little snack it makes quite a difference in the absorption for me; when I take it with Psyllium husk, then...

EDIT: I guess I should expand on the effects of Psyllium. I mean the meds take longer to kick in

devdas · 3 years ago
That's normal. Fibre slows down the absorption of everything.

You can start working late in such cases. We have a lot of people who come to office at 1pm, and stay till 8pm.

If you are instead the kind of person who really works hard when "in the zone", you can try working 10-12 hours a day when you are motivated and then take a vacation/work 3 hours a day when you are out of your zone. That way you can charge up for your next "in zone" phase.

Kids get used to their parents being there all day during some days and not being there during others. As long as you can be there for them when there is something important for them, they and you would be fine.

And then you get the managerial types who demand your presence for morning meetings.

"Cancel culture" is better known as "actions have consequences".

>It's hard for me to tell exactly where this sprung up from, how it is so deeply deeply rooted.

Industrial mass production makes physical objects with incredible efficiency, once things are up and running. Because it's so effective with atoms, people think it can be just as effective with bits, and they're wrong.

devdas · 4 years ago
Software development isn't a production problem, it's a design problem.

Software manufacturing is the bit after you compile the code.

"Of course, the consequences of climate change are billions cast into abject poverty"

The only way to end climate change is to have a serious debate about population control. But no one wants difficult debates (at least people that matter). Nuclear fission once pulled off will make things much much worse. I foresee a population explosion into areas once uninhabitable.

devdas · 4 years ago
An actual debate on population control would be looking at reducing the number of children in the developed world even more, and discouraging suburban housing.

Don't you mean, “Cancel those who want to cancel the tolerant.”

The post to which you responded said, “Only cancel the cancellors.”

devdas · 4 years ago
Ah yes, I misread the parent as desiring to cancel the people demanding cancellation of the intolerant.

Ah, the Paradox of Intolerance. Who cancels the cancellers?

It’s almost as though we should reserve cancellation for those seeking to exclude people from society.

devdas · 4 years ago
Ah yes, cancel those who want to cancel the intolerant.

It does help to think of tolerance as a peace treaty.

It’s politically impossible. Even if we do it, the resulting reduction in fossil consumption here will lower their price and cause them to be burned in developing nations. CO2 is CO2 and physics doesn’t care about politics.

Poor countries cannot afford the luxury of caring about the distant future and poverty is worse than most natural disasters. There is too much to be gained by exploiting cheap energy to undercut others on manufacturing cost. The rise of China is illustrative.

Game theoretically this requires an “all cooperate” scenario in a game whose defection payoff increases as more cooperate. Ask yourself the odds of that in today’s world.

The climate solution would be to pour massive amounts of funding and subsidies into every possible candidate for this, and into scaling and cutting the cost of the candidates that we already have.

We have to get some mix of solar, wind, nuclear, geothermal, hydro, batteries, etc. scaled to the point that it can beat coal and oil on the open global market. It has to be able to win on pure economics.

Reducing the cost of non carbon based energy to below the cost of carbon based energy is the only solution that will “take.”

devdas · 4 years ago
So the developed world could also enable cheap, clean energy production in the third world.

I wonder if Amsterdam specifically is filled with single-family houses. I suppose some larger apartment houses must exist, housing a few families.
devdas · 4 years ago
There are apartments, but construction in the desirable areas is limited.
