>>Given current events in the USA, I can't emphasize enough how worried one should be

I've been putting my pants on every morning for the last several years, had breakfast, gone to work, and come home without worrying about any current events in the USA and my life seems no different than 50 years ago except I have modern gadgets.

Social media is not the world. In fact, it's 10% of what the real world is like and how the real world thinks. It's why I ignore social media except for HN and one other but I only scan the headlines and rarely pop into comments like this.

And I'm happy.

EDIT: And the comments below are proof why you, too, should ignore all social media and why you, too, will be happier.

Fixed this for you: "I haven’t been affected, so everyone else is overreacting."

You're comparing apples to oranges here. The USA is supposed to be capitalistic, free market, yada yada. China doesn't make that claim.

The main point the comment you replied to is trying to make is that the US doesn't put their money where their mouth is.

Much like (say) MS Word does? In real time.
dc96 · a year ago
AI is a lot more powerful in this aspect.

MS Word would find no qualms in this sentence:

"I started the car and went for a drive on the highway. There were many other cats on the road but it was nevertheless agitating."

Given the correct prompt (that avoids changing your literary style altogether), AI can quickly suggest cats -> cars and agitating -> peaceful, since it's much better at contextualizing.

What if you mail 2 and they are scanned at the same time and the database isn't up to date yet?
dc96 · 2 years ago
Seems strange they would design a system that could scan faster than they could process the DB, no? I assume there's some queue in between. But the real answer is probably just: multiple scans happen for the same piece of mail. Eventually, one or both of them will be marked as due for payment. The question then becomes, was it worth saving the postage cost for what is potentially a much costlier penalty?

Friend of mine, with money, has a coffee machine, by a company I’d never heard of, called “Jura”[0].

I’d not heard of it, because it’s not for plebes, like me.

Grinds and brews a perfect cuppa in about a minute.

I used to have a toddy maker, where you dumped a whole pound of ground coffee into a bucket of water, let it sit overnight, in the fridge, then you drained through a filter.

The resulting thick liquid was like really good instant coffee. You threw a bit into a cup, added hot water, and it tasted great.

Looks like the comment you replied to links to a Jura as well

It doesn't seem unlikely to me at all. Lots of people are smart or successful despite coming from a broken home. Weird example but Eminem was extremely poor growing up.
dc96 · 2 years ago
You're misinterpreting. When sorted by annual income, the top 5 incomes all have the same value: 380,288. This points to something weird going on in the data, unless all of those specific participants happen to work the same job at the same company. Even then, years of experience and salary increases would likely differ.

I read this like 3-4 times and I cannot parse or understand this comment. What does "DAW/NLE" mean? (DDG search says Digital Audio Workstation, and a whole bunch of links to something NLE Choppa). What does "non-realtime/static artifact from code" mean? What does "got the respect of any capture" mean? What does "wabi-sabi" mean? How does all this relate to "always documenting"?
dc96 · 2 years ago
DAW/NLE = digital audio workstation/non-linear editing (you'd have to search both terms in order to get the correct context, especially if used right next to each other).

The author is probably talking about video editing of some kind, whereby he either regrets not saving more source code or taking more screenshots of his work if I had to wager a guess. Not sure what the "non-realtime/static artifact from code" refers to when it comes to video editing -- perhaps much of it was rendered from code? 3D software, programmatic editing, etc.?

Wabi-sabi being used a bit weirdly in this context, but I think they mean the temporality of it all has innate beauty. Sometimes not capturing every single moment/line of code is OK, and there is beauty in a moment not strictly captured, to be appreciated more since you'll never see it again.

Cancelation fees should be massive, it deprives use of the land if there's not enough time to find a new user. Our national parks are a limited resource, don't reserve and take away use from someone else if youre not going to use it.
dc96 · 3 years ago
Cancellation fees should not be more than double the actual fee of booking. This highly incentivizes no-shows and the use of virtual credit/debit cards for the initial booking.
