Linux and the other unices are great for their CLI, but GUIs seem more like an afterthought on that side.
cwnyth · 2 days ago
Hard disagree. I find that Linux (particularly but not exclusively Gnome) is actually even better than Windows or Mac OS. I hate having to use Windows or Mac again for how clumsy and poorly thought out they are. It took how long before they finally got Window snapping? And file search is still atrocious on both, and getting worse on Windows.

It always seemed to me the people who deride Linux's desktop GUI are those who actually never bothered to use it, especially not seriously in the past decade.

Nice! Also works with Courier and Comic Sans, but, sadly, not with Helvetica.

And Arial, Calibri, Georgia, and Cambria. It's missing Linux Libertine fonts, though. So typical.

So the main news is that they're giving up on develping an independent IDE and turning into another VS code fork. The loss of biodiversity and reliance on a no-so-reliable steward is mildly concerning.

They (reps? devs? I don't remember) have recently mentioned that they won't give up on RStudio, that it will stay separate from Positron. I really hope that stays true.

ChatGPT and similar tools hallucinate and can mislead you.

Human doctors, on the other hand ... can be tired, hungover, thinking about a complicated case ahead of them, nauseous from a bad lunch, undergoing a divorce, alcoholics, depressed...

We humans have a lot of failure modes.

Human doctors also know how to ask the right follow-up questions.

Crimson Editor.

A name I haven't heard in nearly 20 years. This was my go-to editor on Windows. Crimson Editor and Dev-C++ were great free tools.
cwnyth commented on Language Evangelism Is Annoying    · Posted by u/amano-kenji

Well...as the Master says:

The Tao gave birth to machine language. Machine language gave birth to the assembler.

The assembler gave birth to the compiler. Now there are ten thousand languages.

Each language has its purpose, however humble. Each language expresses the Yin and Yang of software. Each language has its place within the Tao.

But do not program in COBOL if you can avoid it.

They also make it difficult to destroy. Try deleting your post or comment history, and you can only do it slowly one by one, with only a few sketchy tools for making it faster that go against their terms of service.

Compared to HN, which doesn't allow for any comments to be deleted?

But which "ch" sound? "Ch" as in "church" is just "tsh". "Ch" as in "charade" is just "sh".
cwnyth · 2 months ago
Seconding this. C should be the ʃ sound, and then TC should be the "ch" in "church." The fact that there's no one letter for ʃ is the real tragedy.

That website is a super simplistic breakdown. There is so much more to actual hieroglyphs. You get semi-alphabetic, bi-consonantal, tri-consonantal, determinative, and logographic functions all in the same system, and the order you see it isn't always the order it's read.

There is no objective measure here. What i call good and bad is right for me and doesn't apply to anyone else-

wait - I though I was arguing for consensus here and everyone else was calling me wrong

cwnyth · 3 months ago
Did I mix that up? Regardless of whoever it may be, taste is indeed subjective (de gustibus and all that jazz).
