I'm no expert but to me, what's particularly silly about "breaking encryption" is it does nothing to prevent using user agents from employing their own encryption layers over other messaging system like gpg/pgp or others. So this does nothing to stop someone who is intent on hiding illegal content and it decreases security and privacy for the average user.

Not an issue if they get rid of income tax.

“They” have no constitutional authority to just “get rid of income tax” we live in a republic, NOT a monarchy.

Isn’t that patch just converting inline strings to localized/internationalized strings?

God this comment thread is a series of unsubstantiated subjective opinions trashing languages that people don’t like and ignoring the faults of the languages they do….

Why must we rehash this type of post every few months?

Why isn’t there a distributed, decentralized or open index that all of these startups can utilize? I understand that these startups are all are focusing in on different problem areas, but doesn’t it make sense to have something like open street maps so that all of these companies can share their compute resources in order to maintain something competitive with the big guys? Or even if it’s not fully decentralized these startups teaming up to build a bigger index for themselves makes a lot of sense to me.

I have no knowledge of this field but something like that would seem seem to make sense.

We feel your pain with maintenance. We have plans to handle this by using LLMs to detect response anomalies.

From our experience, reverse engineering is still less prone to breakage compared to traditional browser automation. But we definitely want to make integrations even more reliable with maintenance features.

Wouldn't something like snapshot testing from a scheduled probe be more effective and reliable than using an LLM?

Every X hours test the endpoints and validate the types and field names are consistent... If they change then trigger some kind of alerting mechanism to the user.

There are lots of things to worry about the state of the web (and the wider internet) but this is not it.

I do dislike websites that require JS unnecessarily, but I just do not read them. Most people do not even know what framework you use. It comes down to "a few people are nasty about what I do". That is unavoidable if you do anything public.

No, the "industry" is not going to move away from React (or Vue or Solid or Svelte), but idiots on HackerNews (and Reddit and Twitter and Mastodon, etc) might finally stop conflating web SITES and web APPS. One can dream.
cphoover · 2 years ago
Agreed...Another gripe... the amount of people on HN complaining that a web-app doesn't 'work without JS, when the number of user's who disable JS inside their browser is well under 1%. HN users don't even consider they are not in anyway typical web users.

One thing which is really confusing is why are Android users obsessed with iMessage? Android users can send text messages to iPhones, the can call iPhone users, and they can use third party messaging apps to communicate with iPhone users.

It really isn’t clear to me why so many people are so angry they cannot use iMessage on Android.

cphoover · 2 years ago
My whole family uses iMessage because it is the default client on their iphones. I'd love to partake in the family group chat.

For those technically savvy enough to download an additional client like Meta's Whatsapp or Messenger... it's no problem, but for the less technically inclined (like my mother) they will just use the default client.
