Xi Jinping and his colleagues must be opening a champagne bottle over the US being this stupid. They could have never imagined an enemy so retarded

Every time I hear about these "rationalist" guys they always seem completely bonkers. Not rational at all.

Even legal migration is bad now.

The governments of Europe no longer hold a monopoly of violence. Terror groups and MENAPT groups have brought a diverse range of violent threats to people.

Building a robot army to solve this is one viable solution that is hardware and software based.

Building a robot army is a ridiculous idea.

The efficient & practical way is to stop renewing residence and work visas, making acquisition of visas harder through complex demands of high language proficiency, and a high amount of money as proof-of-funds, perhaps requiring a local referral too. It's what countries that don't want immigrants but don't want to say it out loud do.

It’s funny, a few groups I belong to solely use FB. One group is for the preservation of weatern history and a friend digitizes and uploads thousands of pictures (if not 10s of rhoughsands) yearly. The only actual digital copies are on FB. It bugs me that he won’t archive elsewhere. The reason is fb is a commons and an additional backup would be a magnitude more work. I’ve offered to buy hard drives.

Why not upload to archive.org?

They may feel that way, but that seems emotional rather than rational. The choices for small-scale energy sources are: batteries with all their dirty mining, biofuels taking away lots of arable land from food/textile/etc production, or fuel cells which can still involve petrochemicals (but don't have to). There are no perfect options, and strapping enough solar panels or wind turbines to a vehicle (car, bus, train, airplane, etc) to make it drivable is just not even remotely feasible.

No doubt the petrochemical companies want to continue existing, but shifting the transportation infrastructure away from directly burning gasoline and natural gas is a net win even if in the short term there are still hydrocarbons involved. Going all in on electric vehicles only is not diversifying the solution space enough.

Mining affects a limited local area. CO2 emissions affect the whole planet.

> The fact that a modulo operation is necessary to index into the array makes this function hard (if not impossible) to vectorize, and thus unnecessarily slow.

It seems to me that this benchmark conflates two optimizations that could be tackled separately.

For example, if you took the naive approach and just use a power-of-2 buffer size so that modulo could be replaced with "&", you'd get a pretty good speedup without resorting to mmap, no?

Exactly. I don't know how could the blog post author have missed this.
