CCP is hilariously bad at PR, period. Their idea of pacifying unrest in Tibet is to put up a giant middle finger facing the Potala Palace and surround it with posters of Mao and Xi.

Hard to tell. For example, if COVID came from the Wuhan lab, then I suppose we would say they've been brilliant at PR since they haven't really been seriously hounded over that.

Great article. I did stop reading when I got to the part about how there wasn't a lot of pushback.

Most employees are dependant upon that job to maintain their income. And losing that income creates a big problem.

So there is a strong incentive to accept most things the employer wants to avoid being fired. Including spyware or tattleware or whatever.

Employees know that even though they hate being spied on, raising it as a serious issue risks losing their job. Or, they have heard other employees try and fail to get anywhere against a mandatory policy.

So if it seems to someone like there isn't a lot of pushback, that is a misleading statistic they have gathered.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but The Guardian is run by the upper class. It would be strange to assume they speak for other classes.

That is okay because you can use the phrase “deeply terrifying”. Languages change in general. I’m fine with that.

This specific change literally has had me pacing back and forth in distress before.

Then use the word nonfiguratively instead of literally.

s/literally/directly/

The word “literally” has no synonyms and if it dies it will leave a massive lexical gap.

'Nonfiguratively' would work.

Seems like "data scientist" is now code for "junior Python developer".

I need a person who actually knows statistics, how to integrate, what Bayes' theorem means in practice, the difference between a confidence and a credible interval, etc.

What would this person be called in 2021? (I understand that searching for "data scientist" candidates would be a waste of my time.)

You are looking for a statistician.

>I think that was part of GoT's success.

At the beginning of the show. A few seasons in, lots of people developed plot armor.

By that point the show was popular enough for them not to need a compelling story or nudity; fans would watch either way.
co2benzoate commented on Why California liberals turn into raging conservatives over housing   sfchronicle.com/opinion/o... · Posted by u/jseliger

Just because California is a blue state, doesn't mean it's uniformly blue. Trump received more votes from California than any other state (6 million vs 5.89 million in Texas [1]). There are a lot of pockets of very staunch conservatives in California.

But, yeah, it still tends to be the liberals who are the worst NIMBYs. That's just a result of them believing markets are unable to solve the problem.

co2benzoate · 5 years ago
California's population is 36% larger than Texas' population but only had 1.8% more votes for Trump. In contrast, California had 111% more votes for Biden.

The people here saying the label is "correct" are both wrong, and missing the point. The objective of the model is not "taxonomic classification", the objective is "video recommendation". The label, in the context of the purpose of the model, is completely wrong.

Why does there tend to be a reflexive set of predictable comments on any article about racism within the tech industry that boils down to "Here is some half baked unresearched explanation that justifies why this instance of racism isn't that big of a deal?"
