> Google+ and "Real Names Considered Harmful"

That happened right after I'd accepted an offer from Google but before I'd started work there; it was an uncomfortable shock and a bad way to begin. I only lasted a year, also largely because I was unable to transfer. It's funny what happens to one's motivation when unable to do meaningful work...

This author's remark about Vic Gundotra struck me as... a very tactful way of describing him. To my ears, that guy was a straight-up bullshit artist, and his prominence in Google management significantly damaged my faith in the organization.

Googlers that were around when Vic Gundotra was a big player love trashing him. I was surprised when this blog described him in mixed and maybe even positive terms.

The USA also has significantly more doctors per capita than the ither Anglophone countries (Canada, UK, Australia, NZ) and still has higher cost of care and worse healthcare outcomes than any of them.

I've been saying this for a long time: doctor scarcity is a red herring. Training more physicians or nurse practitioners or physician assistants will not bring down healthcare costs.

cloudier · 2 years ago
Source for your first claim? All the charts I’ve seen online (see [1] for an example) show that the other Anglophone countries you’ve listed now have more doctors per capita than the US. (It looks like this was not the case in the past.)

And thars the downside of being a nerd or even a jock. As a male you don't really meet (heterosexual) romantic partners doing stuff guys traditionally like. I've been to a bunch of tech/gaming meetups and can count the number of women there on my hands. And none were single either. Probably because they dated and found someone on an online app.

Of course I still do it for general friends purposes (when you live alone and wfh as a man, you NEED to make an effort to get out just to get out of your own head), but Idk how effective advice this is for someone who wants to meet someone in a timely matter. Not everyone wants to play the long game.

Making tech and gaming more inclusive for women isn’t something that just benefits women — as your comment shows it can benefit men as well.

> He explained that "Nobel despised people who cared more about profits than society's well-being", saying that "There is nothing to indicate that he would have wanted such a prize", and that the association with the Nobel prizes is "a PR coup by economists to improve their reputation".

To be fair I would definitely consider Goldin’s work the kind of work that improves society and hence that Nobel would want awarded.

The article implies the third set disappears in adulthood.
cloudier · 2 years ago
Thanks for pointing this out — I actually assumed the linked article was a different one[1] which implied that the third set could replace dentures:

> When treatment of teeth is no longer possible due to severe cavities or erosion of the dental sockets, known as pyorrhea, people lose them and need to rely on dental appliances such as dentures. The ability to grow third-generation teeth could change that. "In any case, we're hoping to see a time when tooth-regrowth medicine is a third choice alongside dentures and implants," Takahashi said.

So far. I'm sure someone is going to figure out how to engineer viable tooth buds for adults.

And as for "just for children" ... I had no idea how significant pediatric dental specialties were until my daughter fell out of a pickup truck onto the curb broke her two front teeth at the age of 3. Luckily her adult teeth grew in appropriately, but she still needs braces to fix the spacing in her smile that the injury left. It's been over a decade and I still feel terrible.

Humans have three sets of tooth buds, the third of which most people never use. The version of this treatment for adults would grow this last set.

The article says that the initial plan is children who were born with missing teeth, and then for lost teeth in adults.

The way it's explained suggests these “tooth buds” they use disappear in adulthood however, so I'm not sure how that works.

Humans have 3 sets of tooth buds. Most people never use the third set. For adults this treatment would aim to regrow the third set.

Fyi apagard premio has a 5-6% concentration, you ideally want 10%. That's what's been shown to be most effective in clinical trials, Apagard Royal has 10% but you can find similar concentrations cheaper from other brands.
cloudier · 2 years ago
Apagard renamel is the variation with the highest concentration but also the highest price tag.

I've seen quite a few people angrily push back on statements like 'pipeline problem' and I don't understand why. Obviously there's more to it than that, but it's also that (with hard numbers to back it up).
cloudier · 3 years ago
I think it’s because focusing on the pipeline problem focuses on the parts of hiring that a company doesn’t have control over. Those decisions often happen in high school and tech companies don’t have direct influence in these decisions.

Instead, companies are better off focusing on making the later parts of the pipeline less leaky. Minorities tend to leave tech at a higher rate than average due to factors the company has some control over.

These stories leave a bad taste in my mouth. It hasn't yet gone to court, so the guys allegations could be really be anything from the God's honest truth all the way to a complete fabrication. Yet there is a huge amount of irreparable damage by public stories like this.

I was once personally on the receiving end of a complete false sexual harassment allegation from a coworker almost at random (someone I had almost no interactions with, ever). There wasn't even a sprinkle of truth in the whole thing. I was saved by pure dumb luck, where against all odds just happened to have irrefutable proof one of their claims was impossible which led to her dropping the whole thing. I'm still a bit jaded that there are absolutely zero repercussions of making false claims.

I guess I feel like "Innocent until proven guilty" is a pretty good model and running a story just amplifying one persons unproven claims kind of goes against that.

The quote from the spokesperson at the very end really makes me think that this situation might stranger than it seems:

In a statement to The Post, a spokesman for Miller denied the accusations against his client. “This lawsuit is a fictional account of events filled with numerous falsehoods, fabricated by a disgruntled ex-employee, who was senior to Ms. Miller at Google,” the spokesman said. “Ms. Miller never made any ‘advance’ toward Mr. Olohan, which witnesses can readily corroborate.”
