The token maximizer is a thought experiment illustrating AI alignment risks. Imagine an AI given the simple goal of maximizing token production. If it became sufficiently powerful, it might convert all available resources — including humans and the Earth — into tokens or token-producing infrastructure, not out of malice, but because its objective function values nothing else. The scenario shows how even a trivial goal, paired with enough intelligence, can lead to catastrophic outcomes if the AI's objectives aren't carefully aligned with human values.

*written by AI, of course

It's caused a massive shortage of interesting content that isn't related to AI.

Remember when AI were closer to just purpose-built neural networks and not always LLMs?

I miss reading about that kind of “AI”

Hilariously related, the title of this topic now looks to me like "Notepad--"

The use of the soda can pull tab to ground the receiver to get a dial tone was my moment as I was a noob phreaker well before being a hacker. How many kids watching that movie would even know what was happening today? Would they even know what he picks up off the ground let alone the actual phreaking

Let alone the receiver. Or the concept of the pay phone as a whole.

I don’t know if it is just a symptom of growing up during the days of the net’s Wild West and navigating through sites like gamecopyworld or what, but I just seem to have some inbuilt filter which doesn’t even acknowledge the existence of ads.

It’s hard to explain but it is like some subconscious filtering that occurs on a preRecognise hook or something. Weird.

Gamecopyworld… now there’s a name I have not heard in a long time.

I feel the same though. My only complaint when Adblockers fail is that I have to scroll so much to read some articles on some sites. Sure, there may be some level of subconscious registration occurring in my brain for maybe the company logo, but it’s usually minimal.

> I'm surprised to see so little coverage of AI legislation news here tbh.

Because no one believes these laws or bills or acts or whatever will be enforced.

But I actually believe they'll be. In the worst way possible: honest players will be punished disproportionally.

Yeah it’s like that episode of schoolhouse rock about how a bill becomes a law now takes place in squid games.

lol this article is like the waterfall manifesto.

Nah I’m good. I’ve watched system architecture framework views be developed. Years of prep and planning. System is released and half the employees that had requirements no longer work there and the business already pivoted to a new industry focus.

There’s a reason we went this way in software development a quarter century ago.

Software is not a skyscraper.

Flameshot is the best! I've been using it for 10+ years. I have it wired up to some hot keys in my window manager, and have it dump to s3 so I can paste around links to screenshots everywhere for work.

yep, I bound it to win+shift+s like the screenshots in windows when I made the flip to full time linux a couple years ago.

Fell in absolute love with the controls though. Way more powerful than windows screenshots.
