cartoonfoxes commented on AI is ushering in a “tiny team” era   bloomberg.com/news/articl... · Posted by u/kjhughes

I worry that once I've done all that I won't have time for my actual work. I also have to investigate all these new AI editors, and sign up for the API's and work out which is best, then I have to learn how to prompt properly.

I worry that messing with the AI is the equivalent of tweaking my colour schemes and choosing new fonts.

Some of what I learned from a decade of keeping up with the perfusion of JS libraries and frameworks seems relevant to AI:

- anything with good enough adoption is good enough (unless I'm an SME to judge directly)

- build something with it before considering a switch

- they're similar enough that what I learn in one will transfer to others

- everything sucks compared with 2-3 years from now; switching between "sucks" and "sucks+" will look silly in retrospect

I hate it so much... some programs are even worse, they don't take ctrl shift v to get rid of the garbage. I've made it a habit to first paste stuff in a text editor, copy it again, and then paste it into programs like outlook so the formatting won't be all messed up...

Still don't know of a single case where the "feature" was useful.

Try the "Paste as plain text" tool in PowerToys - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/powertoys/advanced....
cartoonfoxes commented on How 'Factorio' seduced Silicon Valley and me   ft.com/content/b9e419c6-a... · Posted by u/005vc16607

Every time I start playing Factorio it's always a matter of time before I'm trying to figure out how to solve factories with VHDL and how to interface Magic VLSI with the game's blueprints. From there it's another day or so before I'm reviewing EE graduate programs and working out how much math I would need to grind.

I had this experience with Eve Online back in the day. The optimization limit horseshoes back into the real world.

Case in point: just reading this thread started me learning about discrete event simulation. Damn you Factorio.

The thing is, adding an inline fuse doesn't guarantee that the host would be safe: if the fuse doesn't blow quick enough and lets enough current through, that's bad (plus, you'd have to add a fuse to P-, D+, D- and P+ just to be sure, not to mention USB3). The best option would probably be a complete isolation of the USB device from the host, with a hub that then transfers D- and D+ to the host without a direct electrical connection (while providing its own P- and P+). Think TOSlink, but for USB.

The industrial hubs I'm familar with use optoisolators to separate the host and attached devices, I think. Advantech has a USB-3 version (P/N USB-4630), but I can't speak to these personally.

I wonder if there's a market for USB hubs with breakers/fuses to protect against this. Probably only security researchers plugging in known-sketchy things though.
cartoonfoxes · 2 years ago
Absolutley. In a hardware-development context, we use them to stop frying computers with broken devices. I've had good experience with the BB-UHR304 from Advantech. They're expensive and occasionally sacrificial, but cheaper than replacing an average pc / laptop. https://www.advantech.com/en/products/c9300564-0829-46eb-955...

That sounds nice for you, but your experience is not common I don't think. It's certainly not my experience as a software developer in Canada, where I struggled for years and even now make "just" a comfortable living.

I'm very happy I don't have to worry about rent and groceries and I can save quite a bit, but I'm certainly not able to "not care about money"

HN has a high concentration of above-average salaries, even within the US. It's tough constantly hearing how many multiples more my southern equivalent at FAANG is earning without it affecting my sense of self worth.

Many people who use Emacs a lot make CapsLock an additional Ctrl. Using your left-hand little finger makes it trivial to use C-p, C-n, C-f, C-b as cursor keys.

I've always just used the palm of my hand. You can work a keyboard with more surfaces than just your fingertips.
