Please don't ruin something that works fine by adding unnecessary crap. The only thing Microsoft has to do, is to take a good look at GitLab so they know what they absolutely NOT should do.

Hey efiecho, Community Advocate from GitLab here! I'm sorry to hear that you are not a fan of our actions and/or decisions.

Can you please dive into specifics a little bit and explain what parts of GitLab could be improved and what are some high-level things that you don't particularly like?

No, I just want an issue board where I can view/assign/create issues across users and projects, with common labels - so I have one board with todo/doing/blocked/in-review/done.

Ideally with a filter on which projects to show.

This works for hierarchical structures today, but not across them. (I'm not sure the current data model is easy to bend into this, so it's understandable - it's just one of the few things we've seen that would let us to more of the project mgmnt in gitlab directly).

Thank you for the explanation! I just opened an issue proposing this [1]. Please add a comment with any additional feedback that you might have or feel free to ping me if I didn't fully understand what you are proposing.

Oh, it was more a reference to the opposite thing - we have some projects under an org umbrella (gilab/yellow/slicker gitlab/yellow/wellingtons) - and those issues aggregate nicely under (gitlab/yellow).

But both for managers managing many top level projects, and for developers that are part of those (gitlab/yellow, gitlab/pink...)-gitlab falls down a bit on keeping things organized - it's hard to see if issues in yellow is keeping someone busy and so leaving issues hanging in pink.

Community Advocate from GitLab here! If I understand you correctly, you are looking for a way to aggregate analytics across GitLab, so that users can view information across multiple projects and groups in one place.

We have the Analytics feature designed for that [1]. Please be aware of the distinction between Group-level and Project-level analytics described there.

If you have any feedback on how we can improve this feature, or if you have other ideas, please open an issue [2] and share as many details and examples as possible. We'd love to look into it!

I think as long as gitlab has a diff API and a file list API it would be pretty simple. Unfamiliar with their APIs though.
btasovac · 6 years ago
Just wanted to chime in and add following links from our documentation:

Get the diff of a commit - https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/api/commits.html#get-the-diff-of-...

List repository tree - https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/api/repositories.html#list-reposi...

Hello all, GitLabber here!

We opened an issue for gathering feedback at https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/growth/product/issues/164 and you can find the most up to date information regarding this topic there. Please join the discussion and let us know what you think.

Wow! That’s some change to just drop on us. Guess that settles the issue of whether or not we’re ever going to be able to use this in the enterprise with a big fat no.

I’m not really sure why they’re thinking this is a good idea.

If I tell the legal team that our source control software is sending off data to the vendor and some random (unspecified?) third parties, they’ll have a fit.

btasovac · 6 years ago
Hello, GitLabber here! We’re currently writing an issue explaining the situation, once it’s public I will link it here.

I like how Gitlab promotes remote work, but I don't like that their salaries are based on employee's costs of living.

To me these seem contradictory. If remote work is so transparent, location shouldn't matter.

It feels like they're praising remote work only when it's profitable for them.

btasovac · 6 years ago
Please see how did we start paying team members according to the location in the first place and why we did it here: https://about.gitlab.com/2019/02/28/why-we-pay-local-rates/

There are some high-profile FOSS projects using GitLab, but they're not as visible as they would be on GitHub because they host their own instances:

- https://salsa.debian.org/ (AFAIK this is an ongoing migration)

Others are considering a migration:

- KDE: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/issues/24900

- GNU Emacs: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/issues/28152

Maybe someday we'll have federation to work around this: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/issues/30672 :-)

The Debian migration is actually finished.

Does anyone know why GitLab hasn't taken off so much amongst open source projects?

I have no horse in the race (indeed, I'd love for there to be more variety in this space) but one of my jobs is to link to open source repos and I've just checked.. and the last one I linked to was in December 2018. In the niches I cover, almost no-one seems to actually using GitLab for their open source repos.

Lest you think it's just me, compare https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=github.com to https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=gitlab.com .. the first is packed with projects posted here on a daily basis. The latter? 13 project links in about 50 days.

We are offering our top tiers (Ultimate or Gold) for free to open source projects [1]. You can see the complete list in our repo [2]. Some of the most recent projects that received our free license are Arch Linux, the Tor Project, edX (currently migrating). Just to add a few more: Drupal, Haskell, VLC, Kali Linux, Lineage OS, and more on this comment [3].

Working at gitlab sounds amazing!

I have a question about your compensation calculator however: it seems employees are penalized for living in areas with lower cost-of-living. It looks like you pay someone in San Francisco almost 2x what you pay someone in Vancouver.

Why is this? Is the SF employee worth 2x the Canadian employee?

btasovac · 7 years ago
This was often a hot topic on HackerNews, so we decided to write a blog post explaining why we pay local rates. Please find more information here [1].
